When You Discover You Cannot See

Devotion for Monday, July 27

I am currently on sabbatical, and this devotion was written before I left. Please pray for times of refreshing in the presence of the Lord.

Acts 9:8–9 (NASB 2020)
“Saul got up from the ground, and though his eyes were open, he could see nothing; and leading him by the hand, they brought him into Damascus. And for three days he was without sight, and neither ate nor drank.”

Spiritual clarity often begins when God exposes our blindness. Saul believed he understood God better than anyone around him, yet his encounter with Jesus revealed how completely mistaken he had been. The blindness that followed was not merely physical. It revealed the true condition of his heart. Sometimes the greatest act of God’s mercy is not giving us more information but showing us that we have been trusting our own understanding.

Honest humility creates room for God to reshape our lives. Saul’s transformation began the moment he stopped insisting he was right and allowed himself to be led by others. God still works this way today. He gently uncovers assumptions, attitudes, and patterns that keep us from seeing Him clearly. Every moment of conviction is an invitation to greater freedom, not a reason for shame.

Growing in Christ requires the courage to let God challenge what feels familiar. Ask Holy Spirit to reveal one area where you may be relying more on your own perspective than His. Then take one practical step today by inviting a mature believer to speak honestly into that area of your life.

What belief, habit, or attitude might God be asking you to reexamine today? Write it down, pray over it, and invite one trusted Christian to help you see what you may be missing.

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, just as You opened Saul’s eyes after revealing his blindness, open my eyes to see You more clearly. Keep me from trusting my own understanding when it conflicts with Your truth. Give me the humility to receive correction and the courage to follow wherever You lead. Amen.
