Welcome, Holy Spirit

Devotion for Saturday, August 8

Thank you for praying for me during this sabbatical. This devotion was written before I left, and I am asking the Lord for times of refreshing in the presence of the Lord.

John 14:16
“I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, so that He may be with you forever.”

The Christian life is not sustained by occasional spiritual experiences. It is sustained by a daily relationship with Holy Spirit. Jesus promised the Helper because He knew His followers would need more than memories of His earthly ministry. They would need the ongoing presence of God in every season of life. That promise is just as true today as it was in the upper room.

Welcoming Holy Spirit is not inviting Someone who is absent to finally arrive. It is responding to the One who has already chosen to dwell within every believer. We often pray, “Lord, be with me,” when His promise is that He already is. A better prayer is, “Lord, help me become aware of Your presence.” That simple shift changes the way we approach prayer, worship, work, relationships, and every ordinary responsibility.

As this week comes to a close, remember that the goal of the Christian life is not merely to know more about God. It is to know God Himself. Holy Spirit delights in revealing Christ, guiding His people, producing His fruit within them, and shaping them into His likeness. Every day offers a fresh opportunity to walk with Him. Every moment is another invitation to welcome His leadership and respond in faithful obedience.

Reflection:
Before beginning your responsibilities today, pray one simple prayer: “Holy Spirit, help me become more aware of Your presence today.” Then remain attentive throughout the day for moments where He gives you peace, wisdom, conviction, or an opportunity to encourage someone else.

Prayer:
Holy Spirit, thank You for being the Helper Jesus promised would remain with me forever. Teach me to welcome Your leadership with humility and faith. Make me increasingly aware of Your presence, shape my life to look more like Christ, and help me respond with obedience to whatever You ask of me today. Amen.
