Carlos Jeronimo · FINDING NEW LIFE

How could I have ever imagined that a single bottle of liquor would turn my life upside down?

Everything seemed normal and enjoyable between parties and social gatherings until the negative consequences began to appear.

First, I began experiencing nausea and discomfort, which gradually worsened, and I craved the calming effects of alcohol. I eagerly anticipated the next party.

Beneath the charming facade, a malevolent force lurked, capable of wreaking havoc on anyone who indulged in its intoxicating effects.

Fast forward a few years, and I found myself alone, homeless, and a slave to alcohol.

The shelters provided me with a sense of sanctuary, but addiction became an inescapable part of my daily routine. To satisfy my insatiable cravings, I was compelled to scavenge empty cans and bottles from the dumpsters, perpetuating the relentless cycle of waking up feeling sick from alcohol consumption, experiencing a temporary recovery, and relapsing into drunkenness once more.

How can we be honest enough to ask ourselves if our alcohol consumption is gradually and subtly suppressing our will?

Before you deceive yourself into believing that you have control over your life and can balance responsibilities with addiction, you must be genuinely sincere.

This is a matter of life and self-destruction, and it’s your life.

I remember one day I was sitting on the train tracks. Alone, weak, and reminiscing about my past with a bottle of alcohol by my side.

I wondered if this kind of life had changed me, leading me to abandon responsibility and escape into drunkenness.

I wanted to be drunk all the time, and I had to pay a high price to get my way.

How foolish, I thought to myself. It was one thing to savor life and the present moment, but quite another to desire to prolong the intoxicating effect of alcohol.

How did I trade the love for my loved ones and prioritize my own selfish desires?

Perpetual drunkenness.

A state that led me to live only in fantasies. Fantasizing that everything was fine and that I didn’t bother anyone here, and no one bothered me with their comments: “Stop drinking before you destroy yourself.”

I never wanted to admit it, but deep inside, I was stabbed by the conviction that what I was doing wasn’t right. But I didn’t have the strength or the courage to shake off my weakness to alcohol and take responsibility for my actions.

I raised my gaze, searching for the end of the train tracks. The farther I looked, the closer the two tracks met, blending into an endless perspective.

And I asked myself: How far will I go if I continue on this unbridled path?

Will I stumble over so many rocks and problems that will ultimately lead to my demise?

Will I be satisfied with what I’ve accomplished, simply getting my way?

The last thought that crossed my mind brought tears to my eyes. Deep within my heart, there was a special place reserved for my mother, who had always loved me. I could only imagine her suffering, knowing that she didn’t know where her son was.

I thought about my children, whom my ex-wife took. She took my most beloved treasure. I had pushed them out of my life.

Is it more valuable or worthwhile to worship alcohol excessively or to nurture the love of my loved ones?

I grabbed the bottle and hurled it far away onto the train tracks, shattering it into pieces. “Get away from me!” I screamed bitterly.

From today on, I will rise from the ashes.

And that day marked the start of my life-changing journey.
