Reading & Wine in Portugal

We’ve reached the point of this Portugal vacation where it’s just a lot of reading and wine drinking. Amazing.

Fool's Errand by Robin Hobb

A few weeks ago I finished Fool's Errand , by Robin Hobb. This is the first book of The Tawny Man Trilogy, which itself is the third series in her sprawling fantasy series The Realm of the Elderlings . As I noted earlier , this book really helped me get out of a reading rut I had been in for a while. That's the magic of Robin Hobb's writing. It's been the case for all seven of the books I've read…

House of the Dragon: Season 3

I just watched the finale of the third season of House of the Dragon and... I don't know, I think I'm done with this show. It's hard to feel invested when basically every single character is not interesting. Daemon Targaryen—played by Matt Smith—is the only character who is captivating each time he's on screen. If this was a show about him in particular, it would probably be good. Endless whining…

Lisbon

Madi and I are in Portugal for Whitney and Tom's wedding (congrats!), which was actually in Sintra. It's my first time out of the country, so it was really cool to have this first leg of our Portugal trip be in Lisbon with a bunch of friends from back home. Above are 10 of my favorite photos from the Lisbon leg of the trip. 1 — Our first big open view of downtown Lisbon from Lumi Rooftop bar as we…

Committing to Creativity by Herman Martinus

Nice blog from Herman on routines and discipline and creativity: Action begets motivation, not the other way around.

Portugal Vacation

We just got into Portugal for a friend's wedding, and we're going to turn it into a two-week vacation. First time out of the country for me.

Monster Ultra Red White & Blue Razz

The most Patriotic drink I've ever drunk. Despite how chaotic this looks, it's actually pretty good and mellow. Some of these blue raspberry/rocket pop flavors are pretty bad (Ghost's version in particular I don't love) but if you like the classic White Monster you'll like this one. I'm putting a 50 on it.

I Love My Emotionally Stunted Friendships by Tyler Austin Harper

I enjoyed this read on male friendships, from Tyler Austin Harper: My relationships with other men are centered on shared activities. Why do some people see that as a problem?

Fool's Errand has broken me

Robin Hobb is cruel. Fool's Errand is so good, but man she really knows how to break your heart with these characters.

The Odyssey by Christopher Nolan

Is it possible to go into this movie with no expectations? Last night I watched Christopher Nolan's most recent film, The Odyssey , and really enjoyed it. I have far fewer words to share about the movie than many other people do . Mostly, I came out of the movie thinking it was really good, but not great. It's maybe not even a top-five Nolan film for me. That has more to do with Nolan's elite…

Robin Hobb getting me out of a reading rut

I've not read nearly as much this year as I wanted to. For a while I was slogging through a few books and just not super into any of them. I DNF'd a few and recently started Robin Hobb's third series, The Tawny Man Trilogy. It's amazing so far.
