Over the past year, dating later in life kept showing up in my coaching conversations. Not just questions about profiles or apps, but bigger questions about communication, disappointment, and how not to become destabilized when things feel uncertain.
That’s when it became clear to me that dating is one of the places where our habits show up most quickly. Not just romantic habits, but life habits. How we communicate, how we handle setbacks, and how consistently we show up when things get uncomfortable.
What I’ve come to see is that the way we do one relationship is often the way we do all of them. The same patterns we bring to friendships, work relationships, and family dynamics show up in dating sooner or later. That’s why this work isn’t just about dating. It’s about consistency.
I’ve been exploring these ideas more directly in my writing about dating later in life. What started as conversations about dating quickly became conversations about steadiness: how to stay grounded, communicate clearly, and keep showing up even when things feel uncertain. One of the most common examples of this shows up when chemistry feels strong but consistency is missing.
I wrote about this recently in a piece that looks at what happens when the spark is there, but the consistent follow-through isn’t.
Even if you’re not dating right now, the principle still holds.
The way we show up in one relationship is very likely to be the way we show up in all of them.
