Bonjour Everyone,
With the scary news of the wildfires and destruction near Bordeaux, I worried for my friend Blandine. She and her family run the winery, Chateau-Figeac, outside Bordeaux.
Chateau-Figeac is one of only three family owned wineries, in the fertile Saint Emilion region, a UNESCO world heritage site. Their Grand Cru is amazing! Thankfully, Blandine let me know their region and vineyards are all safe and unaffected. Right now, she’s in Dordogne about 100 miles away and keeping inside because of the smoke reaching that far.
That’s Blandine, in the middle, at the Jurade, the medieval ceremony taking place every year in September, where she, as a member of the 120 Jurats, the brotherhood of the wine growers, wine merchants, merchants and wine experts, give the Ban de Vendages, the harvest permission.
I was honored to be invited by Blandine to attend the Jurade a few years ago. The procession through the village, the ceremony and the wine tastings were a once in a lifetime experience. Her whole family are so welcoming and committed to their traditions of wine making and honoring the land. And I’m so thankful they’ll have centuries more to come.
