I started writing this essay back in April and wasn’t sure if I was going to share it. Writing about a blended family feels a little risky, especially when you really love the people that inspired the writing.
It’s an essay about becoming a stepmother as a women who never wanted children.
It’s about building a business as a fierce, independent, creative woman while also trying to build a beautiful family life.
It’s about moving to a brand new city for love and learning that love itself doesn’t change the fact that any of this is really fucking hard.
So I kept the essay in drafts. But over the past few days, I’ve been presented with those very same lessons. Again. Unexpected schedule changes. A house full of teenagers in the dead of summer while trying to maintain some sort of boundaries and structure. And a relationship that desperately needs a few days to be nurtured (and not just during a Whole Foods run).
I found myself depleted today. Again. So I opened this draft. Again.
Because maybe there’s another woman out there who needs to know she’s not alone while she’s trying to be everything to everyone. That doing your best looks wildly different from one day to the next. And that even inside the most beautiful, loving homes there are challenges that make you want to scream into the void.
