Open Markets is now available on Amazon

I’m very happy to finally be able to share this news: the English edition of Open Markets is now available on Amazon for only 20 dollars!

It is a fact-filled, research-based work of graphic nonfiction, written for readers who are curious about economics but do not necessarily want to read a conventional economics textbook.

The book opens with two people talking in a café in Stockholm. You might even recognize the place:

They start talking about the pros and cons of firms and markets, and I show up and guide them to some interesting research regarding economic freedom, institutions, and the welfare state.

Some of the questions covered:

Why do we obsess about money? Are products made to break? Why do we work so hard? How can we best help the poor? Does globalization force us to work harder? Why do humans create markets almost everywhere they go?

The book uses economic research, historical examples, and illustrations to explore how markets emerge, how they enable people to cooperate, and why they sometimes produce outcomes that deserve criticism. Here’s an example - two of the traps that rich countries avoid:

Swedish readers have actually been able to buy the English edition through Bokus for the past two years. Making it available on Amazon, however, involved a lot more red tape than expected, so reaching this point still feels like an important final milestone. And I believe the book may be even more relevant in the United States today than it was when I began the translation project.

The book is illustrated by Ola Skogäng, one of Sweden’s bestselling comic-book artists. His illustrations give the economic arguments a visual life and make complex ideas easier - and much more enjoyable - to follow.
