The Banal Sublime of Robert Adams

Figure 0: Robert Adams. Colorado Springs. 1968, gelatin silver print, 14.8 x 15.1 cm 1. Introduction What is stronger, pleasure or pain? Edmund Burke (1729-1797) would argue the latter, claiming that emotions like sorrow and terror are both more intense and longer lasting. This argument is the foundation for his 1757 treatise A Philosophical Enquiry into the Sublime and Beautiful , in which Beauty…

Favourite Books this year so far

These are the best books I have read this Jan and Feb, out of about 20 alright ones. I will try to write some reviews every couple months rather than letting them pile up at the end of the year. I still need to finish my best non-fiction of 2025 list. Ah well. Elena Ferrante - Napoli Quartet books 2 & 3 For ages I ignored these books because of the covers, which look like the kinda fake art you'd…

2025 Favourite Non-fiction Part 1

I know it is late to write another list of 2025 books, but I feel the need to exhaust some thoughts so that I don’t have to think them any more. I am thinking this blog will continue to be a hybrid of dumb lowercase writing alongside more serious reviews and criticism. Last post I spoke of the appeal of being trapped, of being kept prisoner in someone’s skull. You can exit the skull if you stop reading, but soon you realise you are trapped again,…

2025 Favourite Fiction Part 1

"For years I have had the belief that all my questions will be answered by the books I am reading. Books, however, only lead to other books.” - Yiyun Li This has been a really long year. A year of peaks and valleys in which the valleys were crevasses and the peaks were termite mounds. Through periods of hopelessness I read compulsively, finishing a hundred and something books. In the Sims 4 you…

Opera review: Dead M'am Walking

I wrote this review for magazine6000. It was 2000 words which they said was too long, I should cut it in half. I said fair enough and cut it to 1500. Then I didn't hear back. A few weeks later it was published, but someone had cut it down for me, taking out the meaner parts. Fair enough, but certain omissions caused it to make no sense. So here is the edited version and the full version is below.…
