It’s kind of wild how squeamish my brain is to Just Writing Something.
But apparently (what’s up Day 3) writing on a blank sheet of paper instead of directly into cyberspace is working for me at the moment. Fine. Working-ish.
Chalk one up for the meatspace.
Aligned with (somewhat anxiety-inflamed) introspection and backpack of behavioral science knowledge, I continue to try to better understand why I find writing so very challenging.
I do legitimately quite like writing. I know it’s good for me. (Better not do it.)
As elaborated in today’s quadrant-flavored chicken scratch, I’m highly proficient throwing spaghetti strings of prose at the screen where they stuck in iMessages to myself, Google Docs, and substack drafts.
Messy spaghetti everywhere. These strings of disparate thoughts and ideas stress me out.
Using Wispr Flow really sauced this ability.
The My other challenge, perhaps unsurprising from aforementioned spaghetti mess, is deciding what to write about that is compelling. Compelling to whom? Admittedly, to others. There, I said it.
I’m trying to right the ship (hello again, Day 3) because when I (try to) write for others or with an end goal in mind (… posting this online! … gaining/losing my only followers! … being publicly shamed), my brain cramps up.
When I think about writing about what I’m interested in (and occasionally wildly frustrated by): behavior (often my own), I articulate my weird self with fewer worries, without feeling like I am a slop sommelier.
A classic Process vs Outcome or Journey vs Destination conundrum, it seems.
Things I’ve contemplated (but not written about… until now!) today:
Clearness Committees - The OG Personal Board of Directors?
A clearness committee meets with a person who is unclear on how to proceed in a keenly felt concern or dilemma, hoping that it can help this person reach clarity… members may not speak in any way except to ask the focus person a question.
Denominational. Yes? Necessarily? No.
Could most people immediately identify enough trusted advisors to be on their Clearness Committee? Maybe not. (Group chats don’t count).
Are some (particularly nurturing) Reddit threads pseudo-Clearness Committees? Almost certainly.
Can technology (ahem, AI) provide a Clearness Committee? (Sorry, had to. But, I mean, active listeners FTW?).
Why are some people attracted to type 2 fun?
I (very likely, like you) loathe reading the alarmist headlines icing the top of virtually all content, digitally or otherwise. Stand by for a Chrome plug-in that takes an alarmist headline like “AI is going to kill your job” and turns it into something more realistic based on what the article (actually!) says and the data that surrounds it. If you’re still reading things (bravo!) you shouldn’t have headlines that are making you spiral as you scroll, like me. I’d like to believe that I’m rationally immune to the effects of these hyperboles but I’m not. And, if AI is in fact going to kill my job, then at least I will read in peace until it does.
