As evidenced by the contents of my accruing chicken scratch, there are always reasons to Not Do The Thing.
It’s something I was reading this weekend, I was linked back to this post by Tim Keller in The Atlantic. A particular line that Tim’s wife, Kathy, said it after Tim had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, hit hard. They were both 70 years old at the time:
I thought we’d feel a lot older when we got to this age.
Time only ever moves forward. As benign and unhelpful as it is to actually say out loud: Don’t wait until you feel differently.
When I look back on 2026 in January, will I have actually taken the actions that I wish I had, or will I have just thought (and still be thinking) about them?
Even though my chicken scratch project feels like bumper cars gone completely off the rails, I know at the very least I’m doing something.
