It’s been a long time coming, but we’re thrilled to share some significant improvements to our mobile app as well as a brand new web-based version of Cantilever.
Our most requested feature - you can now download albums so that you can listen to them on the go! Either download albums one at a time, or set the entire app into auto-download where each new release will be downloaded when you open the app. When albums are rotated out of the platform after 30 days, the downloads will be auto-removed.
Two toggles, one to download everything as soon as it comes on the app, one to use cellular data. Find both in settings.
We’ve introduced a tracklist toggle in the “listening tab” making it easy to select tracks in distraction free album listening sessions.
Everything we’ve ever published (now just over 100 albums!) will be readable in our archive. Archive albums are not streamable - but follow the links to buy a copy or stream elsewhere.

The idea that Cantilever is a “music magazine you can listen to” is something that I have repeated many times… but I think it finds an even fuller form on our new website. For now, we’re choosing to hard paywall everything — users can start a free trial of course, but there’s no “free” version of this site, or set number of articles you get to read for free. Media consistently goes through revenue generation shifts — print magazines went to free online content funded by advertising. But it’s clear in the era of Substack that there’s an audience out there that’s willing to pay for well-crafted, thoughtful online media experiences. So, with this particular online music magazine we’re doing two things — ensuring the writers who contribute to Cantilever are fairly paid for their contributions, and making sure that the artists who are featured on our platform are also fairly paid for their streams.
