Note from George

The world just did something it hasn't done to Canada in a century, and almost nobody noticed. Here's the number, the reversal behind it, and who's actually writing the cheques.

Let’s dive in.

Over the past year, foreign investors bought $183 billion worth of Canadian stocks and bonds. That’s a real number, not a typo and not a talking point. Statistics Canada itself calls it unprecedented.

Here’s what that $183 billion actually is. Picture a pension fund in Singapore. Instead of building a new office tower in Toronto, it buys shares of Royal Bank of Canada on the stock market, or it buys a Government of Canada bond. Either way, it’s sending money into Canada to own a piece of something that already exists, a company’s stock, or the government’s debt, not to build something new. That’s called “portfolio investment,” and $183 billion of it came into Canada in the past year.

It already reaches your retirement account, your job market, your government’s budget, and your mortgage renewal, more directly than you’d think.

Here’s what makes this genuinely remarkable, though: two years ago, the opposite was happening. Foreign investors were pulling money out of Canada, not putting it in. Something specific changed that.

Here’s what’s waiting behind it:

  • Exactly how that $183 billion actually shows up in your paycheque, your pension, and your mortgage renewal

  • The named billion and trillion-dollar investors now lining up behind Canada, and why

  • What Trudeau did that drove this same money out the door, and what Carney did to bring it back
