Late Tuesday night, we published a special report after Trump posted on Truth Social that he’d “paused” 50% tariffs on Canada because the two countries had a “DEAL.” At that point, Carney’s office had said nothing - not a statement, not a confirmation, nothing. We flagged that gap as the story.
A few hours later, after our report went out, Carney’s office finally responded. Their language was very different from Trump’s: “substantial progress,” not a deal. “Important work still to be done,” not a resolution. The tariff pause is real - it lines up almost exactly with what Trump announced - but the finished deal he claimed doesn’t appear to exist yet, at least not by Ottawa’s own account.

What Trump Actually Claimed
Trump’s post did more than announce a pause. Alongside the “DEAL,” he signaled something much bigger: a resurrected Keystone XL pipeline, “awoken from the grave,” and the suggestion of a wholesale reset in the US-Canada relationship - not just a tariff truce, but a new chapter entirely.
That’s not a small claim. It’s Trump declaring the shape of the deal itself. So how did Carney’s government respond? What did it realize, hours later, once the dust settled on what Trump had actually put out into the world?
