Not in any film. Not in any book. Not in any archive that exists today. The story of the Panama Canal Zone — the community, the culture, the people who built their lives on a strip of land that no longer legally exists — has never been documented the way it deserves to be.
Canal Zone Documentary exists to change that.
What Most People Do Not Know
Ask someone outside the Zonian community and Panama what a Zonian is. Most will not know. Some will guess. Almost all asked will not get it right.
That is not an insult. It is a reality. The Panama Canal Zone was home to a community unlike anything that has existed before or since in American history — a place with its own schools, its own culture, its own language, its own music, its own identity — and most of the world has never heard of it.
Without deliberate, serious documentation, that is how it stays. The Canal Zone becomes a footnote. Then the footnote fades. Then Zonians are not even that — just people who remember something that nobody else knows existed.
That cannot be the ending of this story.
What CZD Actually Is
Canal Zone Documentary is a feature-length documentary film project — and everything being built around it.
Thayne Wheeler, a Zonians whose fundamental years were spent on Quarry Heights, attended Balboa Elementary, Curundu Junior High, and Balboa High School, is the director and producer behind the project. He holds an MFA in Film Directing from ArtCenter College of Design. This is not a passion project assembled on weekends. This is his full time work — every day, without a paycheck, while the project finds its footing.
Alongside the film, CZD produces the Substack publication — free articles and paid deep dives covering Canal Zone history, culture, and community. CZD Review, a quarterly historical magazine, is edited by Managing Editor David Dahlstrom, a Zonian historian, with contributing editor Catherine Stockwell. Together they are building a permanent archival record of Canal Zone life. Growing archives document Zonian musicians, visual artists, and firsthand testimony from those who lived it.
LionHart LLC, the production company behind Canal Zone Documentary, was recently formed. The legal and financial infrastructure of a professional film production is being assembled. A pitch deck — a formal presentation used to bring a film project to studios and investors, showing them the vision, the audience, and the case for why this film should be made — is in development. A meeting with a film studio is on the horizon.
This is a real production. Being built in real time. Without outside funding. Yet.
The Zonian Community
Across the major Zonian Facebook groups and Instagram, the combined eyes reaches approximately 200,000 people. Zonians, their families, their descendants, Panamanians and people who love this history — they are there. They exist. They are reachable.
CZD has 643 Substack subscribers and a growing Facebook Page (as of June 9, 2026: 2.2k). Those numbers matter — but they represent a fraction of what is out there.
Here is the reality that every film studio and every investor will ask about before they commit to a project: is there an audience? Does anyone care enough to show up?
For Canal Zone Documentary the answer should be obvious. Of course there is an audience. The Zonian community is real, passionate, and deeply connected to this history. But passion does not show up on a spreadsheet. Follows do. Subscribers do. Paid tiers do. Comments, shares, and engagement do.
When Thayne sits across from a studio and makes the case for this film, he needs to show them numbers that reflect the community’s actual investment. Right now there is a gap between how much Zonians say they want this documentary and how many have taken thirty seconds to follow, subscribe, or share.
That gap is the obstacle.
What “Support” Actually Means
Supporting Canal Zone Documentary does not require money. It requires showing up.
A follow on the CZD Facebook Page takes thirty seconds. A free Substack subscription takes thirty seconds. Sharing a post with one Zonian who is not following yet takes thirty seconds. These are not small things. They are the foundation on which everything else is built.
For those who want to go further — a paid Substack subscription at $5 a month funds the tools, the subscriptions, the design work, and the ongoing production of content that keeps this project moving. Every dollar contributed right now is going directly into a project that currently operates without outside funding. The software, the design tools, the publication expenses, the legal and business infrastructure — these costs are real and they are being covered out of pocket while the project builds toward sustainability. Thayne works on this full time without a salary. That is not sustainable indefinitely. Growing the community and the support base is not just about proving audience to a studio — it is what allows this work to continue at all.
That belief needs the community to share it — not just in words but in action.

You are that audience. You have always been that audience. CZD just needs you to make it visible.
