British Transport Police began deploying Live Facial Recognition (LFR) at Victoria Underground station on August 11, expanding an existing railway trial into London’s Tube network. The pilot will rotate through selected Underground and Network Rail stations and has been extended through November 2026. BTP says deployments are intelligence-led and aimed at identifying people wanted for serious offences.

Separately, reporting today says the Metropolitan Police plans permanent LFR infrastructure on Oxford Street, with further expansion contemplated for additional London locations.

This represents a shift from occasional police facial-recognition deployments toward routine biometric identification within everyday public infrastructure. The rights questions are substantial: privacy, anonymous movement, protest participation, false matches, watchlist criteria, retention and whether surveillance expands from serious suspects to broader categories over time.
