Dear Reader,
As a writer of 30+ novels who’s been published for over ten years, I never stop learning. The rage of the romance world for the past few years has been a genre I don’t write in: Romantasy. I’ve read some of the most popular books in this category, but I always thought the world-building and political intrigue needed to make the story gripping weren’t my wheelhouse. Have you ever wanted to write a romantasy novel?
If you, like me, have been curious about writing in this genre, I’m excited to share that I’ll be attending a conference hosted by Reedsy Learning on how to write gripping romantasy on April 19th, and you can too. More details on this below.
If instead, you’re not interested at all in writing, just skip past the bookish deals section to read a short romantasy story I wrote that you can judge me on. Let me know if you find this short enemies-to-lovers fun, and please tell me, how badly do I need the conference?
About the conference:
Industry experts and uber successful romantasy authors, including New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout (From Ash and Blood), will talk us through romantasy trends and craft.
The schedule will include sessions on how to:
⚔️take common romantasy tropes and make them fresh
🦄build tension between your main couple and make the readers root for them
⚔️deliver the right pay-off, balancing world-building with romance
🦄keep the readers turning the pages
If you want to meet, talk, and interact with some of the biggest names in publishing, come join me on April 19th. You can sign up for a one-off ticket at this link. You’ll also have the option to enroll in a Reedsy Learning Membership to have access to all their conferences (6 every year) and multiple webinars each month. Use code CAMILLA10 for $10 off the conference ticket.

Mira had tracked the Shadowolf for six months.
Six months of cold campsites, ruined boots, and a standing order from the Crown to bring back his pelt—preferably alive, but not necessarily so. Mira was so tired of eating the game she snared in the woods instead of the delicacies the palace provided, and of not having access to regular warm baths, that she was leaning toward dead wolfie. Easier, faster. No risk of complications.
She had followed him through the Wastes, across the Elowen Mountains, and once, humiliatingly, in circles around the same cursed village for an entire fortnight before she’d realized he had doubled back just to mock her.
She knew this because he had told her. In a note.
Better luck next loop, Hunter 🐾
He’d signed with his paw. The gall.
The message had been delivered by shadows of the night, abandoned next to her sleeping head on the animal hides she used to sleep on the ground. Every night. For half a miserable year. She’d kill for one night on her soft feather mattress at court. She was going to kill. Him.
She’d burned that note three days ago. And tonight, she finally had him.
He was cornered in the ruins of the old watchtower, his gray fur turned silver by the moonlight seeping through the collapsed roof. His too-intelligent blue eyes glowed, tracking her the way predators track other predators. He was larger than a regular wolf. Apart from his size, the shadows pooling at his paws were the other giveaway of his true nature.
Killer. Monster. Enemy.
The demon didn’t run.
Every creature she had ever cornered ran. This one simply sat in the center of the collapsed tower and watched her cross the threshold with his head tilted in a preternatural calm that Mira would almost call amused.
She’d wipe the attitude right off him with her blade.
Mira raised her sword. “Shadowolf.”
Hunter. The greeting pressed behind her eyes; it came from within her. You are shorter than I imagined.
“And you’re fluffier, guess we’re both disappointed.”
No need to get touchy-feely. He snickered inside her head. You’ve been trying to capture me for six months. I thought they’d send someone taller.
“Short or not, I’m going to skin you,” she said, with great professionalism, “and make a warm coat out of your fur.”
All I hear is talk.
He was right. She was stalling. Mira hated the inexplicable instinct that was stopping her from gutting him on the spot.
He was a demon. The shadows at his paws weren’t cast; they were grown, living darkness rooted inside him, born from the corruption of his soul.
“Are you not going to run?” she asked.
From you? The amusement sharpened into a dark heat that coiled in her belly without her permission. No.
Her blade did not drop. But it didn’t strike either.
“You’re a demon,” she reminded them both.
And you, he purred, have spent six months thinking of nothing but me.
“So have you.”
True. One silver ear flicked. Are you going to end me now?
She should have. She had every reason. The Crown, the contract, six months of cold roads and lost sleep and a reputation built on never hesitating.
“Why didn’t you run?” she asked again.
I wanted you to catch me.
The shadows at his paws withered and twisted until the wolf was gone and a man stood in his place.
Not a man. A demon. He was tall, broad, and otherworldly handsome. Not to mention stark naked. Licks of shadows provided him some modesty, but the rest of his sculpted body shone pale in the moonlight: the flat muscles of his chest, abdomen, and arms, the hard ridges of his hipbones, and his powerful thighs. His hair fell to his chin in unruly waves, the same silver of his fur. And his full lips paved a road straight to hell.
The demon took a step toward her, his shadows slithering around him, and another.
He gave her plenty of time to flee or stab him. She did neither.
He was towering over her now, blue eyes looking down at her. He lifted her chin with a finger that was surprisingly warm. “I’m going to kiss you now, Hunter.”
The voice, the same as before, now came from within and without.
That’s when she should’ve stabbed him; instead, Mira parted her lips on a gasp as he pulled her flush to him.
Her sword clattered to the floor. His lips crashed onto hers. And Mira lost herself in the demon’s shadows.
