I’ve had a film, or at least an idea for one, rattling around in my head for a few years . It was inspired by a magazine article, and I know its something I need to explore because it won’t leave me alone.
I also believe that this idea has been waiting for the right circumstances, without me trying to force things into place. Then I read a Note on Substack and a lightbulb clicked on, the person who wrote it might be the person the project has been waiting for.
So I did what any indie producer would do, reached out with a cold call.
Nine times out of ten these calls go nowhere but you have to explore every option. But his time I got lucky. This call turned into an on-going conversation with a really cool human being.
This is someone whose career I’ve followed for the past few years, and the potential to work with them is really exciting. What I find interesting is the serendipity of it. I just happened across a Note of theirs on Substack. If I’d missed it, this project would have gone in a completely different direction.
And it still could. It might not work out, and I’ve kept my expectations in check accordingly.
Where am I going with all this. I’m not sure. There’s definitely an undercurrent of “the universe alining”. Something I feel we need to try and tune into more often if possible. Indie film making is all about the hustle. There aren’t really any shortcuts and the path forward is usually full of twist and turns. Some of which we can prepare for and others we’re just along for the ride, hanging on for dear life.
But I do believe in timing and being ready as a creative philosophy. The cold call could have easily gone nowhere. Instead its opened up a new path and hopefully a new friendship.
I’ll keep you updated if things do move forward, but for now I’m just glad the universe gave me the nudge to open Substack and read that note when it did. And perhaps thats the lesson I’m learning. You can’t force timing, but you can be ready for it and when the moment shows up in the form of a note on Substack… you cold call it.
