I used to believe writing was only a solitary practice, that tortured artists worked all their lives for pennies and zero recognition until they died. I’m not sure where I got this idea as a homeschooled girl, but maybe I read it in a book somewhere. In any case, I think the idea of the solitary writer appealed to me as a teenager because I was already isolated and tortured and doing unpaid labor as a “wife in training.”
