As GTM pros, we know how important it is to have a solid understanding of SEO (Search Engine Optimization). But, despite its importance, there are still a lot of misconceptions about what SEO is and how it works. So, in this post I want to set the record straight and share some insights about SEO that you may not have considered.

First, let's start with the basics. SEO is the process of optimizing your website to rank higher in search engine results pages (SERPs) for specific keywords and phrases. But, SEO is not just about optimizing for search engines? It's also about optimizing for humans.

That's right. SEO is not just a technical process, it's an emotional one. In order to rank higher in search results, you need to create content that is both relevant and valuable to your audience. You need to understand their needs, wants, desires, and pain points in order to create content that addresses these (human) emotions.

Here are some quick steps you can take to optimize your content for humans:

1. Conduct a thorough audience analysis: Use tools like Google Trends and Sparktoro to understand who your audience is, what they're interested in, who they follow, and how they engage with content online.

2. Create valuable & relevant content: Use the insights from your audience analysis or from competitor analysis to create content that speaks to their interests. Make sure it's high-quality and valuable, not just keyword-stuffed.

3. Focus on UX: Search engines value websites that provide a good user experience. Make sure your website is easy to navigate, loads quickly, is well designed, and provides actionable insights.

Now, let's talk about another important aspect of SEO - backlinks.

Backlinks are links from other websites that point to your website. They're important because they signal to search engines that your website is authoritative and potentially valuable to searchers.

But, not all backlinks are created equal. In fact, some backlinks can actually hurt your SEO if they come from low-quality or spammy websites.

So, it's important to focus on building high-quality backlinks from authoritative websites in your industry.

Here are some actionable steps you can take to build high-quality backlinks:

1. Conduct a thorough backlink audit: Use tools like Ahrefs, SEMRush, or Moz to identify any low-quality or spammy backlinks pointing to your website. And if you find spam links you can use Google Search Console to disavow those links.

2. Create valuable, shareable content: Will your readers go….hmm.. 🤔 after reading your content? If not create content that is so valuable and shareable that other websites will naturally want to link back to it.

3. Reach out to other authoritative websites: Identify authoritative websites in your industry and reach out to them to request a backlink using tools like Gmass. Make sure your email is personalized and that you provide value in exchange for the backlink.

In conclusion, SEO is not just a technical process, it's a human one.

By focusing on creating valuable, relevant content for your target audience and building high-quality backlinks from authoritative websites, you can improve your SEO performance dramatically overtime and drive more organic traffic to your website.
