I Faked Gratitude for Years. Here's What I Learned

Kristen Lee Mansourian · We Love Our Family...But Damn

I used to fake it.

My husband would hand me a gift and I’d do the whole thing... big smile, “BABE, I LOVE IT!!!” the hug, all of it. Underneath it, this quiet, kind of ugly little story on repeat... wow. He really doesn’t know me, huh. (Very on-brand for a good Chinese daughter, btw, we’re bred to smile and swallow it.) I never said it out loud. I just filed it away as evidence.

Here’s what I’ve come to believe after years of talking to women about this: every single one of us secretly wants the same thing. Not the diamonds. Not the trip. (Well, we want that too.) What we REALLY want is our husband to actually SEE us. Not perform seeing us. See us.

If you’re a man reading this right now, I can already see your lips going “but wtf does that even mean?!” Keep reading, the step-by-step is coming.

It wasn’t that he didn’t see me. He genuinely struggled to know HOW. Two different people, two different sets of needs, and neither of us is a mind reader, no matter how many years we log together.

The Love Menu, if you haven’t heard us talk about it before, is basically the five love languages taken one level deeper. Instead of just knowing his language is words of affirmations and mine is gifts, you get brutally specific, an actual list of exactly what lights you up, in your own words, and you hand it to each other so nobody has to guess anymore. (It’s deeply romantic…trust, and just keep reading)

Mine has stuff on it he’d never guess in a million years, honestly, and it’s not all things either. This past Mother’s Day he got me this water carafe called the Mayu, it oxygenates and structures your water, sounds like the strangest gift on paper, but it was on my list, so it landed like he’d been paying attention the entire time.

What a beauty, eh? For all my biohacking wives, learn more about the Mayu

But my list also has a specific sentence I need to hear that has nothing to do with "you look pretty," and yes, there is a very specific physical ask on there too, use your imagination, I did not hold back. That's the whole game right there. It's not a shopping list. It's an actual map of you.

Neither of us has the bandwidth for a grand gesture every week, and Disney princess movies did us all dirty with that fantasy anyway. So I'm going to say the slightly unhinged quiet part out loud: this is the lazy way to court your spouse and still get REAL results. This one tool cost us nothing and takes 5 to 10 minutes, and it moved the needle more than anything we ever paid a therapist for.

But here’s the part that’s not funny at all: most marriages don’t fall apart because someone cheats. They fall apart quietly first, from a hundred small missed moments nobody names out loud. The cheating, if it ever happens, is just the last domino. Not the first one. Every couple dips. The question is whether you catch it while it’s still small.

So I asked my husband, on mic, from the actual man's side of things: what would make a good man stray? He didn't hesitate. And what he said wasn't about some woman at a bar at all….

Imagine you stop performing gratitude for gifts that he misses. You stop performing gratitude, period. You stop being the CEO of this marriage and start feeling like his lover again. Some random Tuesday, he does something so specific and so exactly right that you have to sit down for a second. Girrrrll, That’s not a fantasy. That’s just Tuesday, in our house, now.

Fair warning, I’ve watched couples try to freestyle this without the actual order, and it turns into a fight about who’s “more thoughtful,” which is the exact opposite of the point.

Upgrading to paid is basically the marriage cheat code to feeling like sexy lovers again, not roommates who split a mortgage. It’s less than the Stanley cup you already own three of AND you get the stuff I don’t put anywhere else:

Step-by-step exactly how to build your own Love Menu (skip the order and you end up with a boring list nobody actually uses)

The psychology behind why good men cheat explained by Roger himself — why that slow erosion happens, what it actually feels like from his side, and how the Love Menu stops it cold

The one mistake that kills this exercise before it even starts. Almost every couple makes it without realizing.

Our own real examples for every single step: the exact gift, the exact touch request, the exact acts of service ask, the exact words I need to hear — so you’re never staring at a blank page wondering where to even begin

The one belief that’s quietly wrecking your marriage right now (”he should just know”) and the exact reframe that replaces it
