Tristen Hopper, the National Post columnist, reflected this week on X: “My main frustration these days is convincing Canadians that things are *not* working as intended and they have to pay attention to politics for the first time in their lives.”

Last year Hopper wrote an insightful book “Don’t be Canada” about the Trudeau government era and the fact that the country had devolved to the lowest of “global standards for dysfunction.” Evidently, Hopper finds that in 2026 with PM Mark Carney, Canadians remain unaware of the country’s deteriorating economy, standard of living, and international reputation. As most Canadians are seemingly cheering on the Carney Liberals’ quest for a majority government and giving them a pass on their dubious record of the last 12 months, Hopper’s observation rings true with what is currently taking place on Parliament Hill. Let’s consider a few news stories from this week for instance.
