Style is cyclical — we all know that. Something old can become new again, and then before we know it, old again. There are also too many microtrends to count. And as with anything, decorating is something people can feel quite strongly about. It's what makes a house feel like a home, and making major changes as the trends come and go isn't always the easiest.
So here are 27 interior decorating choices people feel strongly about, as well as some they hope will go away and never return:
1. "We've all been in maximalist mode, with tons of earthy, green walls; colorful tiles; and natural wood cabinets for a few years now. It's very reminiscent of the '70s. I think the next trend starting in the 2030s might be an '80s revival, swinging back to glam and contemporary."

2. "I sincerely hope that modern farmhouse is dead. You know what I mean — every room looks as if the color has been leeched out of the world and only white, black, and gray remain. There's also a lot of faux antique knickknacks bought at Hobby Lobby."
3. "I'm tired of overpowering backsplashes. There used to be a backsplash behind the sink, and that was it. A backsplash does not need to be everywhere, and it does not need to go to the ceiling. Also, I'm starting to hate marble kitchen countertops everywhere — they're only appropriate for See's Candies and banks built before 1929. It is just not a homey material to me. And can we please stop 'styling' bookcases?"

5. "I don’t think the white/neutral style will ever end, TBH; it’s a classic because it’s easy on the eyes, easy to accomplish, and easy to spice up just by adding a few bold accent colors or statement pieces or art. You can do a maximalist bedroom with white walls and a neutral bed just by adding a ton of art and decor and changing out bedsheets, but you can’t do a minimalist bedroom with funky wallpaper unless you rip it out."
6. "I'll be glad when people stop saying 'pop of color' this, 'pop of color' that, 'it needs pops of color!!!' Not everything needs a ridiculous color thrown in, or a PLANT. STOP SUGGESTING eight million plants. They require time, effort, money...and some people have cats."
7. "When, oh when, will wall words die out? I actually LOATHE all the 'Live, Laugh, Love,' or 'Welcome,' or 'Family is Love' signs on any available surface. I most especially hate going in someone’s house and seeing a sign in each room telling me what the freaking room is. Kitchen sign in the kitchen. Thanks, I thought that giant stainless steel cavern was a fancy open-air toilet."
8. "I have a lifelong pure hatred for labeled stuff. The washer and dryer are a huge clue that I'm in the laundry room. I don't need signage."
9. "Marble, gold, moulding on the accent wall, grey, and modern farmhouse. Honestly, those last two are already kinda dated in my opinion. Plus, painting the moulding colors that aren't white, i.e. color washing."
10. "I’ll die on the sword over this one, but I think a lot of white houses should have brown roofs and not black or grey going forward. More French country and softer to look at."
11. "My life will be better when that ugly, piss-yellow modern gold hardware everyone keeps putting in their bathroom/kitchen is dead and gone. And decorating everything to the max. Every nook and cranny having 12 pounds of crap piled up in a 'stylish' way. Less is actually more sometimes! 13. "I would like to see brass bathroom fixtures make a comeback. They were ubiquitous in the '70s, but are now expensive and hard to find. I did my recent bath remodel with brass fixtures."
15. "I hope that there’s a movement towards NOT demolishing every wall inside a house and owned apartments. It creates humongous communal living spaces, akin to a studio apartment. It hasn’t ever made sense to me. My house’s walls are all way up, pleasantly delineating one room from the next, and I thrive off of my separate spaces deeply."
16. "White and black will soften to dark brown and taupe. You’re already seeing it in some high-end interiors. There is also so much vibrant Dorothy Draper-style vivid color happening in that world as well. The grey/white/black farmhouse aesthetic is over."
17. "Grey, grey, grey, please go away. In my opinion, grey is the most uninteresting color on the spectrum. Unless you love and want to create permanent cloudy days, keep the grey away!"
18. "I think that people are going to revert to keeping the older/retro stuff/styles and leaning into it (think pink tiled bathrooms, etc.). I think with housing prices being what they are, we're going to get past the idea that if something is not this year's style, it needs to be ripped out and replaced. If we find something that is old and well-maintained, we will embrace it and decorate around it using it as our inspiration."

19. "Mainstream is more minimalist, but I still love the traditional style. Finding an appropriately current sofa with a bottom skirt was hard. My living room is current but still traditional."
20. "I can see a return to tan/cream neutrals. Stainless steel appliances will move on, and white appliances will make a comeback."
21. "I love doing Nutella for tiles/expensive fixtures. My husband and I only want to redo our house once if we can manage. Then I like to paint the walls with colors or put accent pieces in. Painting is easy and really inexpensive; redoing our kitchen floors is not."

23. "Gray. Whoever thought that living surrounded by gray walls, with a gray floor, is a moron. It's like living in a concentration camp made of cinderblock — very depressing. Light bouncing off gray makes our skin look bad, and colors of other pieces in the room look funny. It's one thing to have a stone fireplace, or accents, but this inside/outside unrelieved gray is so forgettable."
24. "Seems like every 'influencer' is doing the beige, black metals, natural wood, greenery thing. Not much color."
