Since the dawn of time, humans have wondered where we "go" and what happens after we die. The question has been debated for centuries, and while some people continue to wonder whether there's a way to communicate with people on the "other side," others believe they've received a message without a shadow of a doubt. Over on Threads, rumplyrumpus posed the question, "Has anyone asked for a sign from a loved one who has passed, and received one so fucking clearly it could not have been imagined or a coincidence?" and these 39 stories are seriously giving me goosebumps:
1."I asked my late mother to come get my father, who was unconscious in hospice. He was suffering. The doctor on the last day of my dad's life had my mother’s full name — first, last, and middle initial. It blew me (and the doctor) away. She signed his death certificate. There will never be a bigger sign for me."
2."My mom loved birds, and often viewed the swans with me in my waterfront neighborhood. Two weeks after her death in 2020 (due to Covid), one swan — they are usually in pairs — swam up to me at my local park at a fast speed. It walked right up to me on the edge of the water and tilted its head like my mom did due to being hard of hearing. I cried, and said, 'Hi Mom, you ok?!'"
3."My brother passed away suddenly at 49, and we couldn't get a definitive answer as to what caused his death. We were in the process of trying to get more answers, and while this was all happening, my parents and I took a break from it one day and went out for lunch. There was a sticky note on one of the restaurant's bathroom mirrors in my brother's handwriting. I keep it in my purse."
4."My late husband gave me heart-shaped rocks when we went for walks on the beach or in the woods. I was having a bad grief day in the first year or so. I lived alone, and my son had joined the Marines, so no one else could have done this. I heard something fall in the bathtub. I went in thinking it was a ring from the shower curtain. It was a small heart-shaped rock. I didn’t keep any in the bathroom. No clue where it came from. None, still."
5."My Nana died a week ago today. I asked her two nights ago for a sign. Her name was Florence, but everyone called her Flo. The next morning, after asking her for a sign, this was on the bathroom door at a restaurant I’ve never been to before."
6."I was in a dilemma trying to decide whether to get a divorce or not. I was up all night, and before I finally fell asleep, I told God, 'I honestly don’t care what you think anymore, I just want to know what my mom would tell me.' At 8 a.m., my dad called me. He had never called me that early in my life. His first words were, 'I feel like something is wrong — are you ok?' His second words were, 'I think your mom would tell you it’s time to leave him.' I did."
7."My mom’s unassigned phone number called me in my car three years after she died."
8."I have one from this year. My big brother Eric died in 2020. This year on my birthday, I said out loud how much I missed hearing him wish me a happy birthday. Fast forward a few hours, and I was doing a live Peloton class. The instructor wished me a happy birthday. Cool. I thought that was it. Then a minute later, she said, 'Did I hear that right, Eric?' And then said, 'Wait, your name is Mark, I don’t know why I said Eric. I don’t even know an Eric.' I do! Thanks, brother."
9."My mom's name was Ginny. She had pancreatic cancer and lived with it for five years. She was in an inpatient hospice during her last days. We walked into the hospital to visit and she was singing 'You Are My Sunshine.' Years later, my sister and I were driving down a random road, and we saw a little shack of a restaurant named Ginny’s. I slammed on my brakes and said, 'We are eating here.' We went inside, ate, and paid. Behind the counter on the wall, there was a little 'You Are My Sunshine' plaque. We nearly fell over."
10."When my brother passed, it was really difficult for my parents. I had to make some choices, and I wasn’t sure if I was doing the right thing. I was walking down the block asking him if I was doing the right thing to give me a sign. Well, there was an SUV at the light, and its speakers were blaring. It kept interrupting me from talking to my brother, but I wasn’t looking up, and it was getting louder and louder. I finally looked up, and on the back windshield it said 'good looking out' and my brother used to always say, 'Good looking out, Sis.'"
11."When my dad passed away (he passed away in 2000), I chose the song 'Angel' to be played. A few years later, we were in Las Vegas, and I told my husband I wanted to go to the casino my dad always went to. We were there eating breakfast, and all of a sudden the song 'Angel' came on the radio overhead. My husband just looked at me, and I started bawling. My dad wanted me to know he knew I was there."
12."My father was a huge Knicks fan, and a few days before they won, amongst all the madness, I randomly said out loud, 'Dad, I know you’re loving this! I feel you with me, give me a sign.' Mind you, I have never spoken aloud to him in that way since right after he passed, seven years ago. Anyway, in that moment, I turned around, and there was a rainbow right over me. I’ve never seen a rainbow just appear without it raining prior, but it did."
13."I used to joke with a friend about feathers being a sign of loved ones being near. He passed, and this huge feather-shaped cloud appeared over my house when we had a party. It felt like he was there with us."
14."One day, I was missing my mom super hard after she had recently passed, and I had the thought, 'Mom, where are you??!' I walked into the local gas station, and a lady I was standing behind had 'The lake is calling, and I must go' on the back of her shirt. My mom was buried in a shirt that had that same quote. I burst into tears, explained why, and the lady hugged me and cried with me. Mom showed up."
15."I was visiting my hometown in December. My dad passed away almost 10 years ago and never got to meet my boyfriend (who is perfect for me in every sense of the saying). We visited the cemetery and, in the car on the way there, I quietly asked my dad out loud, 'If you approve of him, send me a sign in the form of a deer.' Not only did we see deer tracks at the cemetery, but afterward I saw this beauty staring RIGHT at me."
16."I was driving home, and there was a massive traffic backup. My dad used to watch the news and call me to find alternatives. So I asked, 'Daddy, which way should I go?!' and the next song on the radio was 'Take the Long Way Home' by Supertramp. I avoided an hour long backup!!!"
17."About a week after my boyfriend passed away, his mom and I saw a white hawk in her backyard. After hours of sobbing, we just stood there, stunned. We smiled, laughed, and hugged. How beautiful life can be. As a Native, he was known as White Hawk amongst his family, friends, and community."
18."A few years after my brother passed, my mom asked that if he was still with her, to send a red mustang. She thought that with such a specific request, if she saw one, it meant my brother was still with her. She asked while sitting in a parking lot waiting for my dad. Not even two minutes later, a red Mustang pulled into the space next to her. Needless to say, she got her sign, and my brother is still here with us."
19."I was passing a semi on a curved 2-lane overpass on the freeway, going about 70 in the left lane. My left back tire blew. Suddenly, I was out of control, swerving wildly, and I heard my father say, 'Stay calm, hold the steering wheel tight, pump the brake slow, move over.' The semi passed, and I was able to move to the shoulder. My dad had just died two days before. I was driving home from the funeral home."
20."My daughter’s BFF passed at 19. I always told him he was my favorite. 'You’ll always be my favorite,' I’d say when I saw him. After he passed, I was leaving the library and passed a parked car that had the license plate 'Your Fav.' Thank you, buddy. It still stands."
21."My 29-year-old son died in September, and on the day of the funeral, an orange and black butterfly flew around the funeral room. When we got to the car, the butterfly was on the car's roof. On the first anniversary of his death, I asked for a sign. I was having a coffee on the patio, and I kid you not, an orange and black butterfly landed on my hand and sat there for the longest time."
22."After my Grandma died, I was struggling with faith, belief in the afterlife, etc., and I begged her for a sign. On vacation with a friend that year, a woman came up to me and basically said, 'God is real, and heaven is beautiful. She wanted you to know that.' And then walked away. I still get chills when I think of it."
23."I was looking for old river glass while on vacation in North Carolina on Father's Day. I asked for a sign, that I find a piece of glass with a M (dad's name was Michael), or a D for dad or F for father. About one minute later, I found this piece of glass reading 'MA,' and my Dad's name was Michael Alan."
24."My grandma passed the day before Mother’s Day three years ago. I worked the next day and felt so sad seeing everyone with their moms and grandmas. She always made a point of visiting me and sitting in my section at least once a month, and I knew she’d planned to stop by for the holiday since I was stuck working. My host needed to step out, so I was watching the front when the phone rang. The Caller ID was my grandma's name. It was a sweet, older woman who reserved a table, but they never showed up. I like to think that was her."
25."The house where my family lived for 50 years had a 1313 address. Mom taught us ditties to remember our phone number and address as kids. Several siblings use 1313 in our emails. In 2018, Mom died, and my husband and I made quick arrangements to attend the funeral. We got to the airport, and we are at gate 13. Row 13. I was starting to notice. Pick up a car rental in slot 13. I was freaking out. At the funeral, I mentioned this to my brother-in-law, who reminded me that the Kentucky Derby was going on and I should play it. He says even if it hit, it wouldn’t pay much because lots of people play #13. I don’t, but guess who won? Nyquist. Number 13. Mom was with us, and she was ok."
26."My dad passed in 2024. One day in 2025, I was missing him terribly. I said out loud, 'Dad, I really need to hear you tell me you love me just one more time. Not from your voice in my head, but from you in your actual voice.' The next day, a voicemail from my dad popped up on my phone from 2021, in which he ended the message by saying, 'I sure do love you,' as he did at the end of every conversation we ever had. I cried tears of joy and said, 'Thank you, Dad. I know that took a lot. Please rest now.'"
27."My son was born still in October. In March, we went on a family vacation to try to clear our heads. One night, I asked him for a sign that he was with us. The next morning, I woke up to this outside our window. We even said that the top left looks like his profile! We know he was along for the fun."
28."This is so silly, but when I was younger, I used to believe people came back as birds. One day, after our cat passed away, I was trying to joke and comfort my husband by saying, 'Well, you know how everyone comes back as birds? Maybe Jebron (our cat) will come back as a bluebird. Not a red one because we have lots of those.' I started singing the bluebird song. Tell me WHY, later that day, a bluebird was outside our window EATING OUT OF THE OUTDOOR CAT FOOD BOWL. I can’t make this up."
29."I was driving my dad’s truck and talking to him, and this song came on. He listened to Elvis radio 24/7 with me in the car, and I’d never heard this song in my life. And yes, my dad’s name was Jim."
30."The day my aunt died, I came home to New Jersey from New York City. I had to borrow my mom’s car, and she had a local station on the radio when I turned it on. It was one of the ones that stated town names in the county before playing a song. As soon as I turned the car on, the DJ said, 'From Brick to Middletown!' and then played 'Only the Good Die Young.' My aunt lived in Brick, and I was in Middletown. That was her."
31."My dad died quickly from an aggressive form of brain cancer. I was in my 20s and completely unprepared to live in a world without him. I also never really got to say goodbye. A few days after his funeral, on my first day back at work, I got two calls from a number that showed up as 'Forever.' No one was on the line either time. I snapped this photo the second time before answering and burst into tears. I know it was him letting me know he’s still with me."
32."When I was a young child in the 70s, my dad used to call me ‘Grasshopper’ because of the David Carradine TV show Kung Fu. Two weeks after Dad’s sudden passing in the summer of 2002, I was asleep and dreaming that we were playing golf. I hit good shot after good shot, and my dad said, ‘Well done, Grasshopper, you’ll be fine the rest of the way.’ I woke up and, in the pitch dark, heard an odd noise. Turned on the light to find a huge grasshopper on the wall a few feet above my head."
33."I went to Disneyland. I asked my brother to give me a sign to let me know that he was with me. I told him to send me Pluto while I was at Disney for the day. All day…nothing. I walked down Main Street a little sad. I went through the last exit. Nothing. And then, Pluto showed up and pulled me back inside and danced with me! Only obvious sign I’ve ever had. But he really nailed it!"
34."My dad passed away in 2014. In 2016, I went to see a medium. I told my sister I was going. I didn’t RSVP, didn’t use my name, paid cash, etc. The second thing he said to me was, 'Who smells the t-shirt?' My sister had just tweeted about how it’s so weird that my dad’s shirt still smells like him. Blew me away!"
35."My mom was a very special mom. We talked about everything. When she was close to passing, I asked her to send me a sign. She just laughed, and I didn’t push it. When we were heading home from her memorial, this truck pulled in front of us. Thanks, Mom."
36."I asked my friend for a sign on a very dark, difficult night. The very next morning, I had a doctor’s appointment first thing. After giving my date of birth and heading into the office, I overheard the only other patient in line say his date of birth, too — the same as my friend’s. Just overhearing it lightened my heart."
37."I lost someone very dear to me unexpectedly, and a day later the sky said ‘Hi!’"
38."My mom told me recently that she had really been missing my grandma and felt like she wasn’t getting signs from her anymore. She wondered if her soul had moved further away. She asked for a sign if she could still hear her. Within a day, she found a piece of her mom’s jewelry that she thought she had lost. That felt very clear."
39.And finally, "When my mother died unexpectedly a few years ago, a couple of days after I distinctly heard her say 'hello,' after I asked for a sign that she was alright. Unsure to trust my own ears I asked for yet another sign. Later on that day, I got into my car and put the radio on, as clear and as loud as anything, was Adele singing, 'Hello from the other siiiiiiiide.' My mother could make anyone laugh; it was undoubtedly her."
