True Friends

As we conclude Black History Month, I want to take a moment to recognize and celebrate organizations that have demonstrated a steadfast commitment to equality, diversity, and justice for the African American community. This is not an exhaustive list, but these are some of my top favorites:​

• Equal Justice Initiative (EJI): Founded in 1989 by attorney Bryan Stevenson, EJI is dedicated to ending mass incarceration and excessive punishment in the United States, challenging racial and economic injustice, and protecting basic human rights for society’s most vulnerable individuals. Beyond providing legal representation to those who have been illegally convicted or unfairly sentenced, EJI engages in extensive research and education to confront the legacy of racial injustice. • Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC): Established in 1971, SPLC serves as a catalyst for racial justice in the South and beyond, working in partnership with communities to dismantle white supremacy and advance human rights. The organization is renowned for its legal advocacy against hate groups and its efforts to combat systemic discrimination. SPLC's educational initiative, Learning for Justice (formerly Teaching Tolerance), provides free resources to educators to promote inclusive and equitable school environments. Additionally, SPLC monitors and exposes the activities of hate groups and other extremists through its Intelligence Project, offering valuable information to law enforcement agencies and the public. • Standard Error: Founded in 2023 by Samantha Eyler-Driscoll, Standard Error is an organization committed to advancing equity and inclusion in data science, research, and analytics by increasing opportunities for underrepresented groups. Samantha, an expert-ranked academic editor in economics and finance, has over a decade of experience in research publishing. She established Standard Error to provide editorial support to researchers, particularly those from diverse backgrounds, ensuring their work meets high standards appropriate for academic audiences. Supporting underrepresented communities means standing with them in all aspects of life—education, economic empowerment, legal justice, and beyond. Actual progress is not just about addressing one issue; it requires dismantling systemic barriers and ensuring opportunities exist at every level. The organizations highlighted here—Equal Justice Initiative, Southern Poverty Law Center, and Standard Error—are at the forefront of this fight, working tirelessly to advance the Black cause through legal advocacy, research, education, and economic inclusion. Their efforts serve as a potent reminder that justice and equity require continuous commitment, and by supporting them, we help build a future where all people, regardless of race or background, have the resources and opportunities they deserve. Let’s recognize, uplift, and stand in solidarity with those who champion these essential causes during Black History Month and every day of the year.
