This last week was a busy one, and the newsletter will break it all down!
We are really working hard on Bernoulli’s training as he started Level 4 this week at Waggles (more on that later). We found his down stay with distractions could use some work from Level 3, so we have been going to dog-friendly patios and practicing with him.
Bernoulli is doing AMAZING. Kris and I order a drink, work on his down stay, then pick up and leave. Okay, at the last place we got nachos (which were amazing and super not good for you). Bernoulli has been calm, held his down stay for the entire length of our visit, and been friendly with the staff. It has also paid dividends in Level 4.
We’ve mentioned before that we are hoping to put Bernoulli through the training to attempt the test to become a facility dog. His Level 4 class started, and for an hour we ran through a bunch of tasks he may be asked to do, things to practice, and tips and tricks.
Bernoulli isn’t the star of the class anymore. There are four other dogs who are all amazing... like, wow.
Bernoulli rose to the challenge and looked just as competent as his amazing classmates. His down stay with distractions was rock solid. He held it for five minutes like it was nothing. His stand stay with distractions was also rock solid. No breaks, no flinches. His sit stay had one break, and that’s something we need to work on, but I’m confident he will be just fine.
We then worked on “touch,” where a dog presses their nose on a target. Though Bernoulli struggled with touching two fingers, he was a champ with the target stick and loved booping it. Very cute.
Finally, there was the pressure cover, or drape, where the dog lays down on top of you or across you. We didn’t think Bernoulli would do it, but he was more than happy to lay down on either of us and get a cuddle.
We were super impressed with the goober! We still have some homework to do on his shyness with strangers. We want him to approach a stranger for a pet, but he still isn’t there yet. He occasionally picks people he is shy of and ducks and dodges them. He has come a long way.
Beaker has been cooling her jets for about 12 days while Bernoulli heals from his neuter. The dogs still go on walks together, but we have just been going around our property, getting their steps in. Kris decided enough was enough, and it was time to let Beaker have some fun without the boys, so she booked time at a dock diving facility.
Beaker LOVES swimming, and while our creek has “swimming” depth, it isn’t really swimming. The nearest lake is a ways away, so we headed out to Prairie Dog Sports.
They have an amazing facility, but it’s a 35-minute drive from our house. There is a dock diving pool and a massive barn where scent work and other activities are done. Beaker was bouncing with excitement to get into the water, and she swam and retrieved for 30 minutes without a break. She would swim and retrieve until she collapsed, we think, and as that isn’t super safe, we packed her up in her adorable swim robe (a gift from her Twitter boyfriend) and headed home.
It was odd having JUST her in the car, as Beaker and Bernoulli travel together so much. It did remind us of a time before Bernoulli, when Beaker did solo adventures with us all the time around the water. Bunsen did NOT like water, so he stayed home.
It’s nice for the Golden Girl to shine.
The remaining boys don’t have much to report. Bunsen is doing great. This week has been REALLY hot (30–35°C), and he hates those kinds of temperatures, spending as little time outside as he can.
Brix is enjoying the bookshelf/cat shelf Kris got from Costco that I assembled.
We had a busy week with Bernoulli, so Brix and Bunsen got a ton of attention at home, but their week was pretty uneventful. Brix gets a giant morning snuggle from me while I have my coffee and work on social media posts.
A couple of months ago we did our Kickstarter, or presale, for the Mooseleg Dog Toy, and this wonderful community really supported us in getting it off the ground. We have been patiently waiting for the order to come in.
Initially, the projected delivery date was the end of June, but a delay at the factory put us about three weeks behind, bringing us to around July 21. Very excitingly, the Mooseleg toys were shipped to us last week, and it has been a learning curve getting them into Canada.
I have a TON of experience shipping things all over the world, and Kris and I have learned the ins and outs of the rules for different countries. The long and short of it was that we had to stay on our toes, completing forms and applying for importer account numbers nearly every day last week as the Mooselegs moved closer and closer to us.
Currently, the huge shipment is in Winnipeg, waiting for final release from customs before continuing on to us. If everything goes according to plan, they will arrive Wednesday, the 22nd! YAY! We will do our best to ship out all those orders ASAP!
It was a bit stressful, but we learned a ton, and if we work with this company again (which we have big plans to do), we’ll be much faster and have everything set up ahead of time.
