In honor of our virtual fundraiser, we have decided to highlight past collaborations as a testimony to the work we do in the community. Here's what they had to say!
Q: How are you connected to BULK?
A: I am engaged with Bulk Space, a key hub within Detroit's arts and culture community, where I document moments through photography and facilitate workshops that empower individuals to find and express their voice through the medium. Bulk Space serves as a collaborative platform, connecting artists and providing access to resources that are often difficult to obtain, fostering creativity and community engagement.
Q: What are you creating through BULK?
A: At Bulk Space, I am creating an environment where curiosity, emotion, and authenticity are welcomed but encouraged. My goal is to push the boundaries of traditional mediums, using our creative practices to tell contemporary, holistic, political stories that resonate deeply with the culture of Detroit and beyond. I am passionate about fostering an inclusive space where individuals feel empowered to express themselves fully in their work. By engaging with one another, we break down the barriers of self-doubt and embrace the opportunity to explore and grow together. I also strive to ensure that people take full advantage of the valuable resources and tools that Bulk Space offers, enabling them to deepen their craft and amplify their voices.
Q: What made you want to be a part of BULK?
A: I became a part of Bulk Space after hearing about the tremendous support it offers to the arts community and witnessing its commitment to ensuring that every artist has the opportunity to grow. What truly inspired me was the faith and vision of the four individuals who, even without owning a physical space, were determined to create Bulk Space as a resource for artists. It was a platform that not only highlighted diverse artistic practices but also fostered a sense of community—one that I am proud to be a part of and collaborate within. Through Bulk Space, I’ve discovered a network of individuals who share a passion for art and creative expression. It’s spaces like Bulk Space that make it possible for opportunities to flourish—whether through workshops, equipment rentals, printmaking, media editing, or other creative endeavors that, just a decade ago, would have seemed out of reach for many artists. This environment has truly opened doors that empower creators to thrive.
Q: Tell us about yourself!
A: Tim Belknap and Logan Cryer are the Co-curators of Icebox Project Space, a multi-disciplinary gallery in Philadelphia that is housed within a former industrial freezer. Icebox focuses on working with local artists, performers and filmmakers and more, who want to work on large scale.
Q: How are you connected to BULK?
A: Our connection to BULK is through our friendship of BULK members and through the overlapping similarities of our organizations. Most recently, we were able to host BULK as part of our Big Summer Book Sale, an annual book and print sale that we help organize.
Q: What made you want to be apart of BULK?
A: BULK offers many valuable resources and the one that was most important to us was that resource of space. Having time and materials to plan strategically is important and we are grateful that BULK invited us to have this experience.
BULK Space recently attended the 2024 MDW Summit in Kansas City. The summit consisted of 200 artists and culture bearers who work on artist-run galleries, publications, and other platforms gathered for a week of connecting, resource-sharing, an exhibition, field trips, and opportunities to learn about alternative models for navigating the Midwest’s cultural landscape.
We had an amazing time collaborating and conversing with other like-minded organizations. BULK is excited to continue our work with MDW and we encourage you to keep an eye out for the next Summit and other future projects! Click here to learn more.
More exciting news! We’re thrilled to be a featured exhibitor at the third edition of Feria by @clandestina.washere titled “Making Room” at the Gold Dust Motel, December 5–7, during Miami Art Week! Visit us in Room 215 to experience “Above and Below”, a multi-channel, site-specific installation that dives into cross-cultural conversations on watershed ecologies connecting Detroit and Miami. Created by our BULK Co-Directors—artists and curators—it’s not to be missed!
Feria Clandestina is dedicated to creating lasting and inspiring impact during and beyond the fair. It does this by initiating and maintaining essential conversations in the cultural space.

Two Day Workshop
Session 1: December 6th, 2024 - 6-8PM
Session 2: December 7th, 2024 - 6-8PM

In this two day workshop participants will learn how to articulate vision through collage and text, highlighting vision boarding as a technology that is highly accessible. Together we will solidify vision through prompts and discussion, connecting through sharing ideas. Participants will have the opportunity to utilize BULK Space Media Lab resources to create images for their personal vision boards.
Session 1: Participants gather, snack, mingle, discuss their visions via prompts on the table. Select images, colors, patterns, shapes that represent their visions, take and print photos of themselves, and begin to collage. They can also request or find specific images to bring for the second day.
Session 2: Participants can complete the collaging as well as add in their specific photos, add an affirmation, and frame in a magnetic pocket, and share with the group as they wish.
Participating Artists & Collaborators:
Halima Afi Cassells (b. 1981) is an award-winning interdisciplinary community-engaged artist/gardener/mom currently working in her hometown of Detroit. Born into a creative family, her parents photographed her unsolicited murals and fashion as a kid. Community is the heart of her work. After a decade of creating murals, she credits gardening as inspiring her move away from painting into a practice using materials and processes like collage that foster thriving of (human and non-human) communities. In addition to Detroit, her work has been featured in NY, Oakland CA, Berlin, Copenhagen, Bogota, and Harare.
