BULK Space Book Release Party <3
Thursday April 16th
6PM - 8PM

RSVP Here

Join BULK Space for an evening celebrating the release of our spring publications, featuring new work by artists, writers, and collaborators from our community. Each publication emerges from workshops and sustained relationships with partners from Detroit and beyond.

BULK Publications is the publishing arm of our creative ecosystem at BULK Space. Our books provide a space for radical thought, artistic experimentation, and critical discourse rooted in shared knowledge and collective authorship. Spanning printed matter, digital essays, zines, how to’s, and experimental media, our publications serve as both a platform and an evolving archive for the work generated within and beyond the BULK network. We approach publishing as an act of world-building, grounded in care, transparency, and dialogue.

Sovereign Cookin Vol. 1
This collection of recipes and personal testimonials, curated by Kirby Shoote, attest to the power of food sovereignty as an opportunity to preserve and celebrate the tremendous work of those striving to make our world a more accessible place. The contributors in this book remind us that feeding one another is infrastructure. It is how we build resilience. It is how we pass down knowledge. It is how we remain rooted to land, lineage, and one another.

Mothering in Context
Spotlighting the metaphorical connective tissue of motherhood, guests explored a holistic view of maternal health through participating in a hybrid poetry workshop & photography experience. After this workshop, participants’ photos and writing were used to create this publication.

Interview w/ Artist Cannupa Hanska Luger ft Ginger
For our second round of interviews, Jes spoke with Cannupa Hanska Luger, with thoughtful input from Ginger, his longtime partner and manager. Luger is an enrolled member of the Three Affiliated Tribes of Fort Berthold (Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara) and Lakota. His work explores reimagining Indigenous futures while engaging Indigenous histories with reverence.

In this conversation, we discuss his familial roots at Standing Rock, Native handicraft, and—most importantly—his mother, and the ways she has profoundly inspired not only his work but also how he moves through the world.

Her Silent Voice by Ann Esshaki
Through the character of Azar, Her Silent Voice explores the quiet tension between cultural expectation and personal truth. What begins as silence shaped by tradition becomes a journey inward—revealing the strength it takes to listen to one’s own voice and honor it.

Notes on Care
Over the past year we have been working closely with the Ruth Ellis Center to elevate health, wellness, and community care. Through a series of writing workshops. Notes on Care is just that…notes left for you created by the participants of this workshop.

Special thank you to Priority Health Total Health Foundation who provided generous support in the research and production of several books exploring Food Sovereignty, Maternal Health, and Health Literacy. We are also so proud to partner with the Ruth Ellis Center, Hydra Fund, Arielle Laws Nutrition, Fork Around and Find Out, farmer Kirby Shoote, poet Cherise Morris, photographer Eleanor Oaks, artist Cannupa Hanska Luger, Ginger Dunnill, poet Ann Esshaki and all other contributing community members.

We’re extending the deadline for the BULK Scholarship Membership application through April 17th!

If you’ve been meaning to apply, now is your moment—this extension is about making space for more of our community to access, participate, and grow alongside us.

At the same time, we want to remind you that this program is made possible through collective support. If you’re in a position to give, we welcome donations of any amount to help us expand access and offer scholarships to as many people as possible.

Your contribution directly supports artists, thinkers, and cultural workers who benefit from being part of BULK.

Apply. Share. Support.

Let’s build this together.
