The best underwear shots share a handful of qualities that have nothing to do with how much skin is on show. Lighting is the first and most important. Soft, directional light, the kind that comes at an angle and creates shadow in the right places, gives dimension. That is where the image starts to breathe.

The second quality is confidence in the model. A man who looks as if he has been told to stand that way will always read differently from one who looks comfortable in his own skin. That ease, or the convincing performance of it, comes from the photographer as much as from the model. The right direction, the right energy in the room, and the right music, if that helps. The shot is a collaboration, not a command.

The third quality is restraint. The best underwear photographer knows what it is not showing. Negative space earns its keep. A plain background removes competition. The eye goes where there is contrast, so the photographer makes the choice, not the viewer.
