Bubba Chandler was solid through five innings, and the bats finally came alive against a left-handed starting pitcher as the Pittsburgh Pirates took the first of three this weekend against the Boston Red Sox.
Getting the start at first base, Rafael Flores Jr. went 3-for-4 with his fourth home run of the season. Brandon Lowe went 1-for-4 with his 26th home run.
It was another solid start for Chandler, who has allowed four earned runs in three starts this month (16.2 IP). He allowed two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out five over five innings pitched.
Five relievers combined to close out the game, including Mason Montgomery picking up his fourth save of the season.
Nick Gonzales left the game after getting hit by a pitch in the head.
The two teams continue their series on Saturday, with Jared Jones and Sonny Gray set to start for their respective teams.
Termarr Johnson will miss the rest of the 2026 season with a torn ACL and LCL. He was injured when he extended his leg out to try to beat out a throw at first, landing awkwardly.
He was carted off the field and has been out since then. Johnson was the Pirates’ first-round pick in the 2022 draft out of high school and will be Rule 5 eligible for the first time this offseason.
A quick Google search suggests an estimated return time of 9-12 months. No official timeframe was given, which will likely be provided after surgery.
The Pirates made a couple of roster moves before their game on Friday:
RHP Yohan Ramirez was placed on the paternity list. Wilber Dotel was recalled to take his spot on the roster. Billy Cook and Jhostynxon Garcia swapped spots on the Pittsburgh and Indianapolis rosters.
