When you first start out in photography, you generally carry a camera everywhere when I started. There wasn’t a camera in everybody’s pockets so it was a little bit special and a little bit weird.
Even when I was studying photography, I still had a camera with me at all times when I was students generally didn’t have that kind of obsession about it all. They liked it, but I was kind of that next level of addiction. And 25 years after finishing uni, I know that it was also a bit of the ADHD kicking in
I photographed whatever I saw and whatever I liked even back on the film days taking photos of friends or school or whatever was going on and I still have all those photos in little packets that they came back from the chemist in or the good ones in photo Albums.
But something happened, and I don’t know if it was the having a phone with a camera in my pocket or if it was just a life happening but somewhere along the lines I stopped carrying a camera with me.
It really has come to my attention over the years a little bit and I’ve even bought smaller really good cameras as pocket cameras but I don’t really have space in pockets and generally didn’t carry a bag so I kind of just hang out in other places and I didn’t have them on me and when I did put them in pocket bags, they tended to get a bit broken so I have a lot of good little cameras that don’t quite work.
And even with the camera in the pocket I still haven’t remembered to pull it out and take photos or if I do they go into the album of hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of other photos taken over the last. God knows how many years. A quick check shows that I’ve gone over 44,000 photos on my phone.
Well, in an attempt to keep a camera with me again, I’m just putting a 28 mill lens on one of my cameras and trying to keep it with me but also in my hand and not in a bag so I can grab what I see and also making that effort of if I’m going out to do something incidental like for instance taking some clothes to the laundromat that I have a camera with me and if I go for a walk, I can take some pictures.
It’s not the fact that I’m trying to take a good photo. That is not the reason for the photos. It’s keeping my eye open and looking at the world in the way that I always used to to find those interesting compositions and little stories that may not be any interest to anybody else but me But they keep my mind and I trained to put into my actual work photos
So here are a couple of snaps taken the last 48 hours just cause I have my camera with me… And a one because I had my phone with me.
