Alan Photobat Moyle · ShadowBat - Behind Photobat Photography

Back in my uni days, I had quite a few studio lighting subjects. We really went into all the fundamentals foundations and how to use lie how to make it awesome and just general good things in the studio.

When I finish uni, I didn’t have studio lighting and I didn’t have a studio so it was straight into natural light and using that as my main light source and learning how to use that really well which was brilliant,

Now, as I am a predominantly family portrait photographer who photographs and location I am at the will of the weather. Which if you’re in a location it has fairly consistent weather, that is great, but I live in a place called Melbourne Australia where it is common to have multiple seasons in the same day.

And spring time is the worst because it’s windy. It’s rainy and it’s also the time people think we’ll do our family shoots then because the weather is better than winter. Of course this is dead wrong, Spring is the time of the year where there is so many postponements and cancellations just because wind is rubbish or it is stormy.

so the answer? Find a studio and use it to photograph families. It’s been many years that I’ve had this on the list of things to do but I’ve always resisted it because of trying to figure out how to make it more me and not the same as everybody else who photographs in a studio.

Of course I just needed to get started and then work out what my look and feel will be like when I’ve got kids in front of the camera. The way I photograph kids and interact with them is just always going to lead to my own style.

So I kicked off yesterday with three little sessions. I still need to affect my light, but for me the biggest thing was adjusting my interactions that I would usually use on location to being inside. I have to work on crowded control when I’m photographing one kid and the sibling is going crazy running back into the photos. I need to sort that out.

Here is a quick little couple of photos of what I managed to come up with. Side bonus is that I might be able to photograph more kids and cats!
