Launched a new Android course with LinkedIn Learning

Last week, my latest course with LinkedIn Learning launched: Complete Guide to Android Development with Kotlin for Beginners. This course is almost seven hours long, and it’s by far my longest course on the platform. Previous courses average about two hours. What made me decide to create such an extensive course? Let me take you behind the scenes to get the answer.

Behind the scenes

I already have a few Android courses on LinkedIn Learning, including Android Development Essential Training, a five-part course that covers Android development with the View UI system. I created the various parts over two years.

According to the analytics, part one has over 33,000 learners, while part five has closer to 2,600. Now, if we translate this to dollars, part one has made $20,275.91 at the time of this writing, while part five has made only $1,297.58. Over a 15x difference. 🤯

The drop-off is immediate. When learners complete part one, they essentially stop there. Financially, this is a loss for me as parts three to five have not yet earned more than their advances. 😥 Personally, parts four and five contain some of my best teaching on the given topics. Unfortunately, so few people have even seen the content.

The experiment

My Content Manager proposed that I revamp the five-part course into one mega course. The hypothesis is that learners will get through more of the content with it all together in one place. I’m hopeful that this will be the case. I’ll keep you all posted.

Besides that, coding and learning about the latest approaches to developing Android apps was great. Specifically, I completely redid the content to focus on developing apps with Jetpack Compose instead of the Android View system. I hope this new course will benefit many developers looking to build Android apps.
