It’s my birthday today! It’s been a while since I’ve posted, so I figured today would be a great time to say hello to you all again.
Before I get too into the article, I want to say a quick thank you to all who have read my submission to this year’s Jancis Robinson Wine Writing Competition! This is the clever little poem that could… a haiku that I wrote about my favorite grape, along with a pencil drawing I did. The original is framed in my kitchen, right above an old Chez Panisse menu from Enrico Banson’s birthday. Many thanks to Hugh Johnson and the committee at Jancis Robinson for selecting my writing for the long list two years in a row.
Every year, I joke that it’s the anniversary of my 25th birthday. I have poured myself the last beverage of this year, and I’m looking forward to popping something open tomorrow to welcome a new era. To celebrate, here are some lessons from my most recent trip around the sun. Hope you enjoy it.
Be careful what you wish for. You just might get it.
Send the thank you note.
Even if you’re not feeling photogenic? Take the photo.
That being said… never underestimate the power of a signature look.
Take the advice of the experts with a grain of salt. You’ll know when to open the bottle.
You will also know who you want to open said bottle with.
When in doubt, remember that Champagne pairs with everything. And if you have Champagne taste with a Crémant budget? Crémant de Bourgogne uses the same grapes.
To paraphrase the great Ms. Frizzle: Don’t be afraid to take chances and make mistakes.
Those who are considered the best at their craft still strike out more than they hit a home run.
You cannot change your circumstances, but you can always change your reactions.
Representation is always a good reason to do something, but it cannot be the only reason.
Don’t be the best. Be the only. At the very least, you’ll always be the first.
Maya Angelou was right. People will never remember exactly what you said, but they will always remember how you made them feel.
It’s always encouraged to rewatch your favorite comfort movies or TV shows… as long as you get something new out of it from the last time you saw it.
If you’ve seen the information more than once, make it sure it looks familiar the second time around.
Do something that scares you every day.
A lesson from last year that I still need to learn? Push through the fear. You never know what’s on the other side.
Namaste. The weirdo in me recognizes the weirdo in you.
