One of my favorite life habits is something I call “Make One, Take One.”
But let me tell you, this isn’t a last-minute, “Oh, I made too much!” situation. This is intentional. This is the kind of thing where you reach out and say:
“I’m dropping dinner on your doorstep this Tuesday. No ifs, ands, or buts.”
Because when someone is going through a hard time, the most helpful thing you can do… is take the decision-making off their plate. No “Let me know if you need anything.” No “Tell me what works for you.” Just a simple, loving plan.
It usually starts with someone coming to mind. A friend in a busy season. A neighbor who could use a little extra care. Someone who just needs to feel thought of. And instead of wondering what to do… You decide.
You pick a day. You make dinner for your family and simply double it so someone else is taken care of, too. And you show up. Because the truth is, a warm meal isn’t just food. It’s relief. It’s comfort. It’s showing someone you care. And let me say this...don’t overthink it.
This doesn’t have to be your best recipe or your most impressive meal. It just has to be something warm and made with care. A simple dinner made with love will always mean more than something perfect. Most people aren’t looking for a masterpiece - they’re just so grateful to not have to think about what’s for dinner.
Build-Your-Own Meals
Instead of a traditional “main, side, and vegetable,” I love meals that are easy to customize, especially for families. Think build-your-own style dinners. Meals that are flexible, forgiving, and just a little bit fun. Here are a few of my favorites:
Main protein (chicken, beef, shrimp, or beans)
Base (rice, tortillas, pita, or grains)
Simple toppings can go a long way. I’ve included an extensive list of add-ons for these recipes, so feel free to choose a few that you love. And remember, you don’t have to make everything from scratch. Sometimes it’s just easier to pick up store-bought options like salsa or shredded lettuce.
Hints for Packing It Up
When I put together a “Make One, Take One” meal like this, I pack everything separately so it’s easy to assemble. Everyone can make their plate just how they like it- which is especially helpful for picky eaters or busy households.
Use containers that make life easier
I lean on medium to large aluminum disposable (reusable) pans you can pick up at the grocery storeKeep everything separate
You never know personal preferences or household habits—separating food makes serving and leftovers simpleCreate easy dividers
Parchment paper or aluminum foil works beautifully to separate items within one containerUse muffin liners for small bites
Perfect for toppings, nuts, or little extras—silicone or paper both do the trickAdd small secondary containers
Deli containers or small Tupperware are great for anything that needs to stay separateKeep temperatures in mind
An insulated grocery bag (which you can grab right at the grocery store) helps keep hot things hot and cold things cold
It’s not about perfection—it’s about making it easy, thoughtful, and ready to enjoy!
Drop-Off Details That Make a Difference
When preparing to drop a meal…a few little things I like to keep in mind:
Let them know ahead of time
Be clear and confident: “Dinner is coming Tuesday!”Use containers that don’t need to come back
No extra to-dos for themInclude reheating instructions
A small note goes a long wayKeep the drop-off simple
A doorstep delivery is perfectAdd a little something sweet if you can
Homemade or store-bought - both are just right
Just Show Someone You Care
Don’t wait for the perfect recipe or the perfect week. Pick something simple, make a little extra, and follow through. That small act of kindness? It sticks with people longer than you think. So tell me… who are you making dinner for this week? Just do it.
Pick a special person
Pick your day
And make it happen
Because this isn’t about extra effort—it’s about showing someone you care.
If you try it, I would love to see what you made and who you shared it with. Let’s take care of each other, one planned meal at a time.
XO,
Babs
