Dear tea friends,

Happy solar new year, and happy almost lunar new year! The Lunar New Year starts on Wednesday 1/29 this year, and to celebrate, we are collaborating once again with Cambridge-based, über-talented baker Em Tang to bring you a special gift box!

紅紅火火,歡歡樂樂! “Red red fire fire, happy happy joy joy!”

Though we focus on highlighting oolong teas most of the time, once a year, we proudly shine the spotlight on black tea. It is a common tea style familiar to many, but when it comes to artisanal-level, handpicked and hand-crafted small-batch black teas, their artistry should not be overlooked. This year, we have curated a selection of 3 black teas + 1 oolong tea for this RED-themed box, together with Em's *NEW* Dark Honey & osmanthus shortbread cookies to start your new year off with a bang!

Buttery, sweet, salty, tea-y, and peachy. A whole flavor journey in every bite!

Two of the four teas - Dark Honey and Stone Chocolate - are crowd favorites, and the other two are new and limited-edition:

  • 2024 Heritage Red is a tea made from leaves of Camellia formosensis, a cousin of the tea plant that is indigenous to Taiwan. Sweetly toasty like roasted sweet potatoes or oats, with a soft, slightly malty broth, a bit of cherry tomato on the nose, and a lingering mineral finish.

  • 2024 Peach Lapsang is a delightful game-changer when it comes to black tea, with its papaya-like fruitiness and freshness, and an aftertaste that ranges from fresh to caramelized peaches. We applied an additional light electric roast on this tea ourselves to amplify the body for a richer mouthfeel while maintaining the bright fruit and honey notes.

The four warming and festive “red” teas!

Orders are open now until Wednesday 1/29 or when we sell out! Gift sets will be available for pickup starting the week of Monday 1/20.

We’re delighted to be partnering with several local businesses and institutions to host tea classes this lunar new year!

  • Saturday 1/25 at The Loring-Greenough House, A LNY Oolong Tea Tasting (I believe this event is sold out already, but you might be able to contact the organizer to get on a wait list if you’re interested.)

  • Tuesday 1/28 at Cambridge Naturals, Sip & Savor: An Oolong Tea Journey. An in-depth introduction to 4 beautiful oolong teas. Participants will also receive a 15% off coupon for Cambridge Naturals.

  • Thursday 1/30 at the Museum of Fine Arts, Lunar New Year Night. We will be among a fantastic group of local organizations and cultural groups celebrating and sharing our traditions!

  • Sunday 2/2 we will be hosting our own LNY-themed class on “red” teas! We will do a deep dive together into the artistry of black teas, in our own intimate 6-seat tea room. Guests will receive 15% off on any teas purchased immediately after the class.

Hope to see you soon at one of our upcoming events!

Is there anything more joyful than having tea together with old friends and new?
  • Local author and long-time Broken Cup Teahouse fan Allison King has just published her first novel, The Phoenix Pencil Company. Pre-order your first edition before it sells out! Perhaps we can invite the author for a teatime talk at some point?

Did you know that Allison King has been personally endorsed by Reese Witherspoon? PC: @allisonkingwrites
  • Recently I read this article about the Adopt-A-Tree program for heirloom peaches at the Masumoto Farm in California, and fell in love with it. Maybe at some point BCT can cobble together a team to adopt and harvest a peach tree together?

That’s all for now; thank you for reading!

P.S. If you have ever enjoyed our teas or events or had a positive experience with Broken Cup Teahouse otherwise, would you consider leaving us a short Google review? It really helps us so much!!
