The central issue at trial concerned the extent of the defendant’s involvement and intentions in relation to the events leading up to the offence. The case involved the careful analysis of extensive evidence and ultimately resulted in a conviction for conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm. The trial included evidence from previous trials.

Jayne Beckett, instructed by the Crown Prosecution Service, appeared for the prosecution in proceedings that resulted in Sohail Jahangir being sentenced to 10 years and five months’ imprisonment. Jahangir had struck a cyclist while attempting to overtake another vehicle on a rural road in Ilkley.
Alex will be known as District Judge Modgill. He was called to the Bar (Lincoln’s Inn) in 2002. He was appointed as a Deputy District Judge in 2021. The Lady Chief Justice has deployed him to the North Eastern Circuit, based at Sheffield Combined Court Centre, with effect from 3 August 2026.
