A Homeschooling Break To Enjoy The Rain

We’ve just returned from a business and family trip to Las Vegas, only to be greeted by cloudy, dark, and rainy weather. I thought we left that ubiquitous gray drizzle behind when we moved from the Pacific Northwest three years ago. But since settling in the Texas Hill Country, I’ve learned that it’s not just the hills that roll here, the weather does too. While we were away, our home bathed in 80+ degree temperatures, but today the ground is soaked and there's a chill in the air, hinting at freezing weather to come.

A 10 Mile Bike Ride Along Lake Austin Just Before a Winter Snap

This past January, upon the cold snap, I moved plants in and out of the greenhouse, while blankets shielded the raised bed vegetable garden. My fall tomato plants didn’t survive the January freeze, but the remaining greens and herbs hung in there, protected by their covers. We also experienced our first Austin area snow fall since moving to Texas. Our daughter, of course, as she does with any type of weather change, makes the most of it.

Conversely, just a few weeks before in late December, we were splashing around at the lakeside basking in the sunshine. Liken to the day we unloaded our moving truck three years ago in mid-February, it was a sweaty 86 degrees. It’s a reminder to just roll with it and stay flexible as life is full of unexpected surprises. Handle those surprises with a grateful heart and the world is a much better place.

Lake Travis Lake Life in December

By the homeschool desk, the hours stretched,
Fractions tallied, verbs were etched.
Texas skies, so stubborn, dry,
At last revealed a weeping sky.

The first soft patter called my name,
A rhythmic drum, a fleeting game.
Hold the books, let chores delay,
Let’s seize the storm, it’s time to play!

Umbrella snagged with joyous flair,
Boots pulled on with hurried care.
Raincoat flapping, daughter’s hand,
We dashed to greet the soaking land.

Puddles wide as tiny seas,
Cool relief from summer's tease.
We splashed, we twirled, we danced with glee,
The rain blessed our jubilee.

Laughing loud beneath gray clouds,
Our voices pierced the drumming shroud.
No math, no maps, no spelling test,
Just soaking in this fleeting rest.

The Texas ground, parched and bare,
Drank its fill of heaven’s care.
And so did we, as drops renewed,
A spirit soaked, a heart imbued.

Let storms remind, when burdens weigh,
That joy can bloom in skies of gray.
For learning’s not just ink and rule,
It’s rain-soaked boots and life’s small jewels.

With love, health, knowledge, and a little rain, may you live abundantly. See you again in the next post.

Warmly,

Brit-Simone

I love to share what works for me and my family on our health and wellness journey. May you too find what best serves you and yours. ☺️

  • Keep the memories we make safe and organized. This little plug and play gadget simplifies the backup and organization of photos and videos across multiple platforms. I love it!

  • Wow! We gave these tiny devices to my mum who just celebrated her 75th birthday and she stopped yelling when she talked. I didn’t realize how helpful these would be, not only for hearing, but also speaking, and so flippin affordable!

  • I love supporting the gut microbiome. Emma’s natural ingredients focus on eliminating bacterial overgrowth, restoring balance to your microbiome, and help the body heal itself from the inside out.
