In case you didn’t know, I have an (online) solarpunk bookclub (and a solarpunk discord)!
It’s been going strong for a year now, with a wonderful mix of regulars and new people who pop in (from around the world) and I always enjoy the conversation immensely.
BEFORE WE GET INTO THAT: apologies for the slowdown in the podcast and even newsletter for BRIGHT GREEN FUTURES. My personal life kinda blew up and I’m still working through the wreckage (probably will be for a while). I’ll post when I can, but it’s gonna be slow for a while.
In our last bookclub, one of our regular attendees (Connie) asked the three writers in attendance: What are you writing now?
Which was a delightful thing to ask and as we shared our current works, she further asked for links! So I decided to do a proper round-up of three of our regular bookclub-attendees-who-are-also-writers, especially because Dilman and Olivia have solarpunk books coming soon, and I’ve had the privilege of critiquing both!
Below you’ll find a brief intro to each writer, solarpunk-adjacent works they have available as well as new ones on the way, and websites and newsletter signups so you can be notified of new releases (including mine).
Supporting writers helps get more solarpunk into the world! (one way to support writers is to request your local library carry their works!)
Dilman Dila
Dilman Dila is a multi-talented storyteller and filmmaker, author of many critically acclaimed stories, including Where Rivers Go To Die which was a finalist in the Philip K Dick Awards 2024.

Sue was privileged to get an early read of Dilman’s solarpunk novella The Blossoming of the Big Tree, and it’s delightful -- wonderful worldbuilding with a thoughtfully-constructed solarpunk vision as well as a compelling story that hooks you in! Solarpunk bookclub readers are going to enjoy it.

“Dreams of a Yellow Balloon is an emotional biography, about a boy in a wheelchair with god-like intelligence, whose inventions transform his world into a solarpunk utopia. In him, I poured all the dreams and fears I had as a child with a disability, and the discrimination that I suffered. Books gave me an escape, and writing gave me a way to present myself as something other than a ‘cursed’ child. Uganda in the 1980s was fragile, with parts of the country engulfed in war. While it never fully came to our small town, Tororo, the threat of it loomed just over the horizon, and other children teased me, saying, “If fighting starts, we’ll run and leave you behind.” Once, as we played football in a field in our street, a skirmish erupted about three kilometres away, and the sound of artillery rocked us. The other children fled, leaving me. I could not run fast enough, and so I limped alone in the street for more than a minute, struggling to enter the safety of indoors. Uganda is still fragile, and memories of that still haunt me. Writing stops it from turning into a nightmare, for I imagine a beautiful world where people choose peace, and build communities that can be considered solarpunk.”

Sue was lucky enough to critique the first book (Olivia is currently writing the second), and I absolutely love all the plant knowledge that Olivia brings to this, really showing her horticulturalist side! But I love even more how very focused it is on mental health and how to heal the wounds incurred through that 8 book prior series of war and so much damage and struggle. It’s a book of healing and what a society built around that looks like.

Sue has been working on a literary solarpunk novel about families and plants for a couple years, but her life recently turned upside down, so she’s put the literary solarpunk novel on a shelf and pivoted back to writing romantasy to pay the bills. But apparently you can take the writer away from solarpunk but you can’t get the solarpunk out of the writer... my spicy romantasy novel is turning into a feminist smash-the-patriarchy series with plant magic. Apparently the solarpunk is permanent, ha!

While you wait for new solarpunk (or feminist plant-witch romantasy!), Sue has plenty of works already published -- she's a prolific author who's been publishing for 15 years: cyberpunk, futuristic sci-fi, steampunk romance, YA SF, even a middle-grade fantasy novel. And then there's all that spicy romance!
Most of Sue's works are in ebook, print, and audiobook.
Solarpunk
If you're looking for solarpunk, Sue has a 4-novel series (Nothing is Promised), a short story collection (Halfway to Better), an anthology of works from authors on the podcast (Bright Green Futures), and a bunch of random short stories.
Rainbow Anthologies
While Sue is busy smashing the patriarchy via feminist romantasy, she’s also putting together a six volume collection of short stories, reflecting her evolution from writing cyberpunk to solarpunk and not a small amount of subversive lit along the way. Most of these have been previously published, but some are yet unpublished, and she plans to write a couple new ones to round out the themed collections.
The first will release (probably) in May, with the others following as Sue gets them together, (hopefully) finishing by the end of 2026.
