When I was getting ready to open Bridge Books, my dear friend Fiona Forde asked if she could bring her book club. They were reading Niq Mhlongo and he was coming to talk to their group.
The store was not actually open yet. We didn’t have heaters, and it was cold. But Niq gamely came and talked in store that would only open the next day. That was the first of many talks, launches and workshops that he’s done with us.
One of the wonderful things about the book world is how open people are to trying something new. Niq always inspired me with his willingness to sell his books himself, to reach his readers wherever they are – even if that meant roadtripping or driving to farflung neighbourhoods. He also helped give me the confidence to reach out to the world of writers in Joburg, some of the coolest people you’ll ever meet.
