To fully appreciate your Field Guide, be sure to read “The Cult of the Untaught Citizen" first. BW
1. The Gratification Goldfish Species: Attentionus evaporatus Habitat: Anywhere WiFi is strong and patience is weak. Call:”Is that for MEEEE”? Behavior: Expects political change to arrive with the same speed as a DoorDash order. Diet: Notifications, dopamine, and the belief that “waiting” is oppression. Threat Level: High — votes based on whichever candidate promises the fastest emotional delivery.
2. The Blame Sommelier Species: Victimus connoisseurii Behavior: Can pair any personal failure with the perfect external villain. Call: “It’s not my fault — look what they did.” Diet: Grievance, curated outrage, and the sweet aroma of absolved responsibility. Threat Level: Severe — demands political platforms built entirely around revenge fantasies.
3. The Participation Trophy Patriot Species: Entitlementus maximus Habitat: Suburbs, campuses, anywhere “effort” is considered an outdated superstition. Behavior: Believes citizenship is a subscription service with guaranteed benefits. Diet: Free stuff, free stuff, and more free stuff. Call: Look what I got!” Threat Level: Extreme — supports any candidate who promises to turn the Treasury into a vending machine.
4. The Algorithmic Revolutionary Species: Hashtagus militantis Behavior: Thinks posting a meme is equivalent to storming the Bastille. Call: “I raised awareness.” Diet: Viral slogans, aesthetic activism, and zero follow‑through. Threat Level: Moderate — confuses political literacy with TikTok literacy.
5. The Historical Amnesiac Species: Contextus deletus Behavior: Knows history only through vibes, memes, and whatever their favorite influencer misquoted last week. Diet: Simplified narratives, moral absolutism, and the belief that nothing existed before 2015. Threat Level: Severe — supports policies proven disastrous because they’ve never heard of them.
6. The Anti‑Accountability Avenger Species: Responsibilitus allergicus Behavior: Treats consequences like personal insults. Call: “How dare you enforce the law on me.” Diet: Excuses, loopholes, and the belief that rules are for other people. Threat Level: High — demands political platforms built on eliminating enforcement rather than improving it.
7. The Economic Illusionist Species: Mathus nonexistentii Behavior: Believes wealth is created by confiscation. Diet: “Tax the rich,” “Make billionaires pay,” and zero understanding of arithmetic. Threat Level: Catastrophic — supports fiscal policies that would make a calculator cry.
8. The Technological Narcissist Species: Selfius reflectus Habitat: Front-facing camera. Behavior: Measures political reality by how personally validated they feel. Diet: Likes, shares, and the belief that the universe is a customer service department. Threat Level: Moderate — votes for candidates who flatter their identity rather than challenge their thinking.
9. The Civics Dropout Species: Democratus uneducatedii Behavior: Knows nothing about how government works — and is proud of it. Call: “Why can’t the President just fix it?” Diet: Oversimplification, magical thinking, and zero institutional awareness. Threat Level: Severe — supports impossible policies because they don’t know they’re impossible.
10. The Emotional Electorate Species: Feelings-over-factus-factorum Behavior: Votes based on vibes, mood, and whatever emotional weather pattern is passing through their feed. Call: “Oh yeah?” Diet: Outrage, catharsis, and candidates who promise to “get even.” Threat Level: Existential — treats elections like therapy sessions instead of civic decisions.
Remember: A democracy can survive bad leaders, bad policies, and bad luck — but it cannot survive a citizenry that was never taught how freedom works.
Because once the Untaught Citizen becomes the majority, elections stop being choices.
They become temper tantrums with ballots.
And the people who promise the most emotional relief — not the most functional governance — win.
Not because the voters are evil. Not because they’re stupid. But because they are aggressively ignorant: no one ever taught them the difference between freedom and permission. And they have no desire to learn.
