It's Jane's Walk Weekend

I love Jane’s Walks! The first weekend of May is always Jane’s Walk Weekend. For three days, across Canadian communities, we get a chance to connect, share, and discover things that make them special. This year I will be leading my 13th walk, and my 3rd in Winnipeg.

I used to work in theatre. For 20 years, until 2017, I made my living mostly as a lighting designer in theatres right across Canada. As a lighting designer, I would go to a theatre for about 3 weeks working on a show to get it to opening night. I got a chance to really learn and explore different cities in Canada, from Halifax to Nanaimo, St John’s to Victoria. It was a wonderful way to learn about Canada, see how different cities work, all while getting paid!

I’ve been invested in the arts ever since, working to help foster a thriving arts community. Here in Winnipeg, I am a member of the Winnipeg Arts Council board, I am on the board of directors for the Manitoba Centennial Centre, and I’m a board member of a wonderful theatre company, Theatre By The River.

My Jane’s Walk this year is about exploring what an Arts District in downtown Winnipeg could look like. I think we have all the makings for one in place. It could be a wonderful place to support and foster artists, bring people together, and support a vibrant and growing downtown.

We are going to walk around the Exchange District and explore the possibilities together, seeing what is already there, and consider what is needed to turn the area into a destination as an Arts District rather than a place you come to for a couple of hours to see a performance.
