I'm a therapist and I stopped telling people to regulate their nervous system

here's what I say instead

Most therapists spend their time teaching you to stay HERE: ground yourself, calm down, regulate.

Most spiritual teachers spend their time teaching you to go BEYOND: transcend, let go, rise above your problems.

The wellness industry sells you protocols for each, and charges you for the privilege of staying dependent on them.

The truth is that none of the above teach nervous system fluency… and that’s what makes you self-reliant.

Truth be told, I got stuck in the “just regulate your nervous system” gospel too.

I’m writing this to share why I stopped.

Because if you’ve been doing all the regulation techniques (the breathing, the grounding, the shaking, etc.) and you still feel stuck, truly, the problem was never you.

I can almost guarantee it was the instruction.

Regulation does not equal calm. A nervous system that only knows one state is a brittle one. Like the rubber band in your junk drawer that hasn’t been stretched in years, it’s probably ready to snap.

Your nervous system operates under the same physics as a rubber band.

It’s built to oscillate between effort and recovery, charge and discharge, sympathetic and parasympathetic. Every healthy system in your body runs on oscillatory rhythm, and your nervous system is the master conductor.

When the entire wellness industry teaches you that the goal is calm through regulation, they’ve handed you half-assed instructions.

Held calm isn’t regulation.

Two ways your nervous system locks up

A nervous system doesn’t get worn down evenly. Under enough stress, for long enough, it stops moving between its two poles and locks onto one. There are two ways this happens, you can probably identify which one is yours.

Some people lock HERE. Their aperture of attention narrows to a tight beam and the body (like their life) becomes something to manage. Their defense strategies are routine, control, and optimization. These folks have been told to “just relax” a hundred times and it never works, because relaxing on command is just HERE-locked with a poker face.

Some people lock BEYOND. Their aperture of attention blows wide open and the body’s felt sense gets lost. Their defense strategies are dissociation (watching your life from a seat slightly above or behind your body), daydreaming, and spiritual bypassing. These people are told to “just get present,” which is as useful as telling someone underwater to just breathe.

Both positions, HERE and BEYOND, are normal states your system is supposed to visit. The problem, due to constant stress or trauma, is that the system locks into one and never ends up oscillating toward the other.

The fix is tricky, because the two poles need opposite things.

Telling a HERE-locked person to relax makes it worse. Telling a BEYOND-locked person to get present makes it worse. The one-size instruction the wellness world sells fails half the people who follow it, and they walk away certain it’s their fault.

You’re not broken. You just stopped oscillating. The same problem from two different directions.

What your nervous system is actually asking for

Range: the innate ability to hold stress with grace and find relaxation with ease

The capacity to hold more stress and intensity without shutting down, and the ability to drop into deeper rest without leaving your body. It needs both directions, the full stretch and the full return. A system that can go all the way up into arousal when life asks for it, all the way down when it’s time to recover, and move between the two without getting stuck at either end.

That's the actual goal. Not 'calm,' but a wider bandwidth.

This subtle reframe changes everything, including what healing even means. You’re not trying to eliminate stress or manufacture peace. You’re trying to expand the range your system can travel without locking or shutting down. Real growth is building a baseline that can oscillate further in both directions than it could before. Increasing the distance between both poles.

This might surprise you as much as it surprised me, but when a system that’s been frozen starts to move again, the first feelings back online are usually the louder ones: irritation, restlessness, a subtle agitation, etc.

People feel this and assume they’re doing something wrong, when they’re actually on the right track. You don’t go from locked straight to a robust nervous system. You take the elevator down and it stops on every floor on the way, and the loud floors mean the rubber band is finally moving properly.

Why you can’t do this from a book

You cannot read your way into range.

You can understand every word of this essay, nod along, and your nervous system will not have moved an inch. Understanding is a HERE-locked move. The map is not the territory, and for a lot of us the map got so good we forgot the territory went quiet underneath it.

Range is built through the edge-effect.

The edge of what your system can currently hold, in the body, live, ideally with someone else there. The edge is exactly the place your own mind-body signal gets unreliable, because it’s unfamiliar. It’s where a HERE-locked person grips down and calls it focus, and where a BEYOND-locked person floats off and calls it revelation.

The one spot where the work really takes hold is the one spot you can’t read yourself clearly.

Which is why, for most of human history, deep work was never something you did alone.

The nervous system regulates against other nervous systems. It’s how an infant learns to settle, by borrowing a calm adult’s system until it grows its own. That wiring never leaves. It’s called co-regulation. At the edge of your range, you need another nervous system holding the floor steady so you can let go and actually go there.

That’s the piece the recording, the app, and the solo practice structurally cannot give you. The mechanism was never meant to be done solo.

This is the work I do

For years I’ve run a somatic protocol that builds exactly this, and hundreds of people have been through the DIY version. I recently rebuilt the whole thing into a live, 2-hour workshop called SHIFT HAPPENS, where I guide a small room through it in real time. It’s the only way to give the HERE-locked people and the BEYOND-locked people what they each need.

You won’t rewire an entire nervous system in two hours. What you’ll get is the first real shift, the felt experience of your system moving when you’d assumed it couldn’t, with someone tracking you the whole way. That first shift is the thing you can’t un-feel. It shows your body the direction, plants an anchor, and then the daily practice takes it from there.

I run the room capped at 30 people so I can actually see everyone.

The next room is Friday, July 31 at 10am PST. Registration closes the night before. If you do the full two hours and feel like it was a waste of your time, I’ll refund every penny.

Come find your range and make your SHIFT HAPPEN →

With deep respect,
Brian Maierhofer
