Ignition is commenced, and we have liftoff. The rocket has cleared the launchpad, and with a thunderous roar, the enormous engines overcome the forces of gravity and drag as they push the spacecraft through the Earth’s atmosphere. Through the thick air of the troposphere, into the stratosphere, through the cloud layer. The rocket gains altitude and speed, leaving an elegant arc of vapor and exhaust as it rises.
