Can AI Collect Oral Histories? Public Talk at Columbia University | New York, NY

This Thursday September 21 from 6-7:30 pm EST, I will be virtually presenting my work that explores the question: can AI collect oral histories? I will be sharing the study and insights from my award winning peer-reviewed publication, Probing a Community-Based Conversational Storytelling Agent to Document Digital Stories of Housing Insecurity. The event is free and open to the public as part of the Columbia University MA Oral History Workshop Series: Experiments in Oral History Methodology.

Stories play a central role in social movement-building, but doing oral history sustainably in grassroots organizations is challenging. Community-based conversational storytelling agents (CSAs)—computational systems that facilitate dialogue with human narrators to automatically collect digital stories—have the potential to address some of the challenges associated with oral history for social change, including language justice, human capacity, and mental health. Yet, encounters with a community-based CSA also surface perils of machine bias, as well as reduced possibilities of human connections and relations.
