Was removing a tangle of wisteria and privet today. After I had cut the stems and pulled the mass away, SURPRISE a bunch of poison ivy was hiding in the middle. I have no idea if I got any poison ivy oils on me. So this will be a fun little waiting game.
Yesterday I made J. Kenji Lopez-Alt’s Leftover Vegetable Salad with Soy-Dashi Dressing from The Wok . This salad makes use of leftover stir-fried or roasted vegetables. The dressing is a mixture of dashi (I made from hondashi), soy sauce, mirin, sesame seeds, and garlic. Olive and sesame oils are whisked in. “Spicy” salad greends and leftover roasted or stir-fried vegetables are tossed in the…
🔖 I'm done using AI I write this all from the perspective of an experienced lead engineer who used these tools in earnest for more than a year. And I cannot in good conscious continue to use AI for coding (or anything else) any longer.

A crucial part of training to run faster is keeping the easy runs easy. “Easy” can change depending on the weather, recent training, illness, and other factors, so it’s important to be adaptable on easy runs. I use two strategies to help do that. Run for time, not distance First, I plan all of my easy running by time, not distance. Running for a distance can sometimes lead to things like “I don’t…
🔖 Dark mode toggles: two states are enough Yes, the underlying model must have three states, but one is always irrelevant to the actual user goal. Users do not seek out solutions to problems they don’t currently have. A lot of the hate towards two-state toggles is based on poor implementations. This is a thoroughly reasoned argument that website dark-mode toggles should be two-state.
I’ve been working on adding Exercise posts to my site. Mostly this is to “own my running” and not rely on Strava so much (See 🔖 Strava’s Big Changes Aim To Kill Off Apps , Canceling My Strava Premium , and “Strava requiring a premium account…” ). It’s kind of nice to think about what I really need from a running log. I have Strava and Garmin accounts, and there is just so much information from…
Yesterday I made J. Kenji Lopez-Alt’s Red Braised Pork Belly (Hong Shao Rou) recipe from The Wok . This is a dish I’ve made before using The Woks of Life’s recipe . Kenji’s recipe starts with blanching the rind-on pork belly and then slicing it into 1.5-inch cubes. I got the pork belly from Super H-Mart which sold it in ~1 pound strips. Slicing it in cubes was basically cutting the strip into…
