In my recent article, I did my best to explain the ending of Twin Peaks season three. But taken in its totality, Twin Peaks is an incredibly complex and difficult subject due to lack of context and exposition by its director and writer. So let me do a summation of what Twin Peaks actually was.

The Trinity test in 1945 disrupted the balance between the white Lodge and the black Lodge by empowering the black Lodge with an overwhelming amount of negative energy.

This allowed the ancient evil entity known as Judy (Jouday) to spawn BOB. The spawning of BOB and the overpowering dark energy to the black lodge set off the alarm of the Fireman who then summoned an angelic being from a higher realm to restore the balance.

That being was the essence of who became Laura Palmer. But, when Twin Peaks begins, Laura Palmer has just been murdered. What balance could she possibly restore having become a victim of the Black Lodge and BOB?

ENTER AGENT COOPER. FBI special agent, Dale Cooper, who is working what are called Blue Rose (paranormal) cases arrives in Twin Peaks to solve Laura‘s murder. He works this investigation by uncovering evidence and clues of Laura‘s last few weeks of life, her movements and actions, including her all important diary where she Chronicles, her life since the age of 12 when BOB first appeared to her.

All three seasons of Twin Peaks are in essence agent Cooper working that case trying to solve it even the 25 years he spent cooling his heels in the what is called the extra dimensional WAITING ROOM.

Ultimately, in Season Three Agent Cooper restores himself into the world and then utilizing the clue provided him by the Fireman, he travels to meet the elusive and mysterious Philip Jefferies and gives him a date: February 26, 1989, the night of Laura’s murder. Incredibly, Jefferies, who appears to be some kind of industrial electrical machine says” you can go in now” meaning agent Cooper is about to travel back in time to the night Laura was killed.

Cooper does this and an incredible moment occurs, where after witnessing the last argument between James and Laura he positions himself to stop Laura from her rendezvous with Leo, Jacque and Ronnette.

This alters Laura’s fate which is represented in the show when she takes Cooper’s hand as her plastic wrapped corpse from Season One’s first episode phases out of existence because Laura is no longer dead.

Agent Cooper begins to lead Laura out of the woods and intending to take her home. But who would be waiting at home for her? Leland/BOB her father, who has now been cheated of his victim and Mrs. Palmer/JUDY. This is why the Fireman spirited Laura away leaving Cooper alone in the woods, mystified.

The Fireman took Laura to a parallel dimension where Judy would be unable to trace or locate her. The Fireman also gave Laura amnesia, no memory of her first 17 years as Laura Palmer, leaving her alive, but forced to start a new life with a new identity. (as Carrie Page)

Carrie Page has no idea she is actually Laura Palmer.

THE STAGE IS SET FOR THE FINAL ACT.

Cooper continues to follow, the clues the Fireman gave him and UNKNOWINGLY enters that parallel dimension, trying to find Laura and he succeeds! He then convinces Laura/Carrie to accompany him back to her home in Twin Peaks to be reunited with her mother.

Again, Cooper is unaware that Judy is hag riding Mrs. Palmer. They travel to the doorstep of what they think is the Palmer household only to learn the Palmer’s have never lived there.

Laura, who trusted agent Cooper trying to learn about her past, looks mystified and confused. Agent Cooper is mystified as well as he murmurs to himself” what year is this?”

Laura, looks at the house again, which remember is identical to the home she grew up in. SUDDENLY she hears her mother’s ghostly voice, shouting” LAURA!”” You must remember, reading her diary and what her friends learned about her double life. The last three years of her life were spent going out after midnight and coming home around five in the morning.

LAURA!! NOW MEANS NOW!!

So it was a constant battle for Sarah Palmer to get her daughter up in the morning.

I said all that to say this.

Laura, an angelic being that was summoned to restore the balance suffered the agonies and the torment of the The Damned undeservedly.

At the time… in the moment, Laura had no idea WHY BOB was tormenting her.

Her SoulWAR, her ordeal was heartbreaking. And then BOB murdered her. Cooper’s job was to prevent her murder then position her on that street to deliver a scream of ULTIMATE SUFFERING as all of the crimes of Judy, and BOB against Laura, having now been Weaponized, hit Judy like a circuit board struck by lightning, obliterating her.

Restoring the balance and ending the degradations of a parasitic overpowering dark entity.

This is why when asked about a fourth season of Twin Peaks before his passing, director, David Lynch, and writer Mark Frost said there was no need.

This has been Twin Peaks for dummies. The journey was amazing, enjoy the coffee and cherry pie and the smell of those Douglas firs.
