On this day in 2019 Break Your Budget was "born"

Welcome to the TENTH!!! installment of Behind the Business, a series where I deep dive into the inner workings of building a multi-million dollar content business and media platform. Over the last 4 years, I’ve written two books, grown my social platforms to well over 1 million followers, and learned a TON along the way. I am so happy to have you here - and I know you will love this series. Expect new BTB articles every other week - and if you have a topic or a question you’d like me to dig into, please leave it in the comments! xx (btw - these are LONGGGG and detailed. So dedicate some focus time and take some notes! <3)

I have been running Break Your Budget for 7 (yes, SEVEN!!) years, which is long enough that I can’t really pretend I am new to this, even though there are still plenty of days when I feel like I am figuring everything out in real time.

When I started, I was working full-time in finance and building BYB on the side without any real understanding of both what the heck I was doing, and what it could and ultimately would become. I think back then (this was 2019), none of us had any idea what would come of social media just a few years into the future. It originally just began as an interest, turned into a business and eventually grew into the career that allowed me to leave corporate, work for myself and create a life with significantly more control over my time and income.

Along the way, I learned all of the obvious business “stuff” you would expect. I learned how to create content, sell digital products, negotiate partnerships, understand an audience and make decisions without waiting for someone else to approve them. I also learned that building a business is one of the fastest ways to expose every insecurity, avoidance pattern and unrealistic expectation you have, because there is nowhere to hide when your choices directly influence whether something moves forward or not.

The more time I spent building my business, the more I realized that the principles helping me grow it were also changing the way I approached the rest of my life. Consistency mattered more than intensity. Confidence came from evidence that I could actually do it. Systems gave me more freedom, not less. My standards ultimately shaped my results, and the things I avoided created a lot more stress than the work itself.

In honor of the 10th installment of Behind the Business, today I am sharing the 10 lessons that have both helped me build a successful business and that have changed the person I became while building it.

This was my first Instagram post BTW - LOL! I wish Instagram was this simple still

As always, my inner thoughts and BTS of my business is reserved for paid subscribers only. If you want to read on, I’d love to have you! <3
