For my own sanity, I keep trying to figure out how to process in writing what is happening in Minneapolis.
Sorry. When I say “what is happening” I realize that phrasing could come across as vague/inoffensive word soup… similar to the memo from Apple CEO, Tim Cook, this week as he very carefully addressed “events in Minneapolis” & “a time for deescalation” without actually clearly articulating what sort of offense to humanity even inspires him to make any statement at all.
To be clear… what I meant to say is that…
I keep trying to figure out how to process raising kids in a moment in time in America where a federal police force is roaming the streets of a nearby city wearing masks in order to stay anonymous (or perhaps ominous)– while they racially and ethnically profile people in order to abduct them without due process… and also repeatedly kill humans in the streets on video.
And the backdrop for this state sponsored terror is… the President of the United States telling Minnesotans that “a day of reckoning and retribution is coming”, and the Vice President of the United States reassuring ICE agents that they have “absolute immunity” for any actions they take on duty.
😩 It seems as though horrible news can become consuming if you let it. 😰
But if you’ll indulge me… I want to offer you some encouraging news articles coming straight out of Minneapolis:
People organizing to protect strangers, by delivering groceries to them
Faith leaders from across the country are coordinating in the name of justice, and putting themselves in harms way through civil disobedience
The moral of the story is… humans can be really wonderful.
I am in awe of the flagrant ways that so many people are displaying courage in order to acknowledge and protect the dignity of the oppressed in this moment.
Cheers to people being good to one another without reservation.
