I started re-reading one of my favorite books the other night, Walking With Peety, and I had forgotten just what an inspiring book it was. It’s a true story, written by Eric O’Grey, about how he transformed his life with the surprising advice from his new doctor.
At the time, he was 50 yrs old, weighed 340 pounds, had type-2 diabetes, extremely high cholesterol and blood pressure, and was on 15 different medication.
He said most doctors were very similar in their approach.. They would see him for 5 minutes, write a prescription for whatever was ailing him at the time, and that was it. One doc even suggested he buy a funeral plot. 😳
But then he saw an interview with President Bill Clinton, explaining that he went on a plant-based diet and how much it had helped him. So he googled plant-based diet doctors in his area, and found Dr. Preeti Kulkarni, a naturopathic doctor who had a slightly different approach…
After their initial 1 HOUR consultation (no 5-minute visit here!) she recommended 2 things:
Adopt a whole-food, plant-base diet (she actually gave him shopping lists and recipes! )
And go to a shelter and adopt a dog
He called a nearby shelter and told them he was looking for an obese, middle-aged dog so at least they would have something in common.
And that is how he met Peety.
I don’t want to give away the whole book, but there are so many parts that are familiar, relatable, and hilarious. Like shopping for the first time…..remember your first time shopping without actually buying meat or dairy? What the heck is quinoa anyway?
And the first time he actually tried to cook for himself…. who knew rice and beans could produce so much smoke? 🤣
Spoiler alert: he did eventually figure it out and both he and Peety lost a lot of weight and got healthy again. AND, he married his high-school sweetheart and helped HER get healthy too. A true fairy tale ending.
I like to use this book as an example when I talk about Atomic Habits, specifically when discussing Dr. Ornish’s 2nd pillar - MOVE MORE.
Do YOU need motivation to go outside and walk consistently everyday? Get a dog. They will guarantee you walk them at least once a day…. or else 🤣
Anyway - I can’t recommend this book enough.
It has it all:
Motivation
Inspiration
Unconditional Love
Plant-Based Diet
Weight-Loss
Disease Reversal
It basically covers all 4 of Dr. Ornish’s pillars…. eat well, move more, stress less, and love more, so I hope you enjoy it.
I’ll drop my Amazon affiliate link in case you are interested. I do earn a few pennies on these purchases but at no extra cost to you.
Have an awesome weekend!
